8th Graders learned about a graffiti artist named Banksy, and explored how he creates paintings throughout the cities on buildings. After learning how to create perspective buildings using 2 vanishing points, they created their own city with their tag, or name.
After viewing ancient Buddhist Mandalas in comparison to the colorful graffiti work of Banksy, 8th grade artists were inspired to create these symmetrical name designs. The students learned how to use the Principles of Design to disguise their names into each Mandala.
In addition, 8th Graders explore mandalas through paper folds.
8th grade artists used observational drawing skills to create their own shoe or skeleton bone still life after viewing both modern and vintage styles of shoe renderings. Reviewing their knowledge of the Principles of Design, artists EMPHASIZED a portion of their shoe using loud COLORS and CONTRAST. Artist Andy Warhol was an inspiration to create this POP ART style of drawing!
After learning about the history of the silhouette and using artist Kara Walker as inspiration, 8th grade classes created their own silhouette landscapes. The students experimented with watercolor techniques and India ink to design these interesting compositions.
After learning about oldest form of pottery from Japan known as Jomon Pottery, 8th grade artists created their own unique vessels. Students learned a combination of coiling, hand building, and glazing techniques to complete these sculpture mugs that had to sit at least 4 inches tall! Each class had a hot cocoa party to test the integrity and functionality of their project.
