ABOUT HADESTOWN:
Set in a world inspired by the New Orleans jazz era, Hadestown is a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, centering on themes of love, resilience, and hope. The story follows a young musician named Orpheus, who is working on a song to bring spring back to a world stuck in a never-ending winter. When his love, Eurydice, is lured to a wealthy underground factory called Hadestown by its ruler, Hades, Orpheus embarks on a brave journey to bring her home. His music eventually moves Hades and his wife, Persephone, leading to a deal: Orpheus can lead Eurydice back to the surface, provided he walks in front and never looks back to see if she is following. While the story is known as a "sad song" because it ends in tragedy, it is ultimately a celebration of the importance of trying again and finding beauty even in difficult times.
The production is officially recommended for audiences ages 8 and up, making it a popular choice for families with older children who enjoy mythology and music-driven narratives. Parents should note that the show contains some mild mature themes, such as characters drinking alcohol or references to a "hard life," but it contains minimal foul language or graphic violence. Because the plot follows the original Greek tragedy, it can be helpful to recap the central story with younger viewers beforehand so they are prepared for the emotional ending.
