Viva Voce is our premiere mixed chamber choir, consisting of 20-28 singers of high ability. Students in grades 10-12 are eligible for this course. Because of the demands and difficulty of repertoire, students in this choir are also required to be enrolled in Bella Voce and/or Concert Choir concurrently. For this reason, we refer to this class (along with Rhapsody) as a Secondary Advanced Choir. This chamber choir primarily focuses on the music of living composers, but also sings music from any time period. Each year, Viva Voce commissions at least one composer to write a piece of music specifically for the group. Previous composers have included Daniel Brinsmead (Australia), Ben Goshorn-Maroney (Indianapolis), Daniel McIntosh (Kansas City), Paul Carey (Chicago), Ola Gjeilo (New York City), and others. In addition to commissioning music, Viva Voce also performs larger works with band and/or orchestra, such as Will Todd's Mass in Blue (2016) and Jazz Missa Brevis (2018), John Corigliano's Fern Hill (2017), and Franz Schubert's Mass in G (2019). Because it is a highly select ensemble, students must first pass the audition for Advanced Choir (January) and then audition for this group in March. The class meets during Gold 2 from 9:57-11:23.
