The Application
Obtain applications for each school by accessing them through the Common App or the school’s website (For Example: Here and here are the application procedures for Penn State University). Check each school’s website for all requirements. Hint: Write down ALL login information in a secure location.
If applying to any school through the Common App, you must match your Common App account to your Naviance account. Note: For other instructions on the Common App and Naviance, see the video link on your Naviance homepage under “pages” called “common app videos” or check out the Helpful Videos page on this website.
Fill out each application but DO NOT SUBMIT them yet. Have your parents/guardians, advisor and/or counselor review your applications before you submit.
Write the required essay or essays and have someone proofread them. Hint: Follow this link to the Common App essay prompts.
When using the Common App, verify if the college requires a Common App Supplement.
You must request scores from the SAT and/or ACT to be sent directly to your colleges, but most schools are test optional.
Keep track of all deadlines. A good rule of thumb is to complete and submit all materials at least three weeks before the deadline. This gives you time to follow-up and verify all materials have been received. Hint: Look on the school’s website to double-check any deadlines.
Submit your portion of the application. You are responsible for submitting your application electronically or mailing a paper application (including the application, fee (or fee waiver), essay, etc.). Hint: 99.99% of schools use the internet for the application process.
Contact your counselor regarding any additional forms.
