Recommendations
Students applying through the Common App must sign the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form on the Common App and indicate whether they waive their right to access their letters of recommendations in order to “match” accounts and facilitate submission of school forms (see matching instructions on the Helpful Videos page). Students applying via the Common App will have their teacher recommendation sent electronically and are not required to submit envelopes and stamps.
Request letters of recommendation (LoR) from your teachers in the spring of your Junior year or Fall of your Senior year. You may not ask more than two teachers. Teachers will not write letters for students who request LoRs from more than two teachers. Fill out the “LoR” request on Naviance (link on the “colleges” home page). Select the button for “General Request.” This will save you problems later if you add more schools.
With any schools that require paper forms, complete the information on each form and submit it to the teacher, with an addressed and stamped envelope. (This is unusual.)
Hint: Meet with your counselor about your counselor “LoR” and complete your Northeast Counselor Recommendation survey under “about me” or your specific counselor's survey. The survey must be completed by November 17, 2023 (for Regular Decision applications) or no LoR will be written by your counselor.
Submit all requests at least two weeks prior to the deadline.
