NONVIOLENT CRISIS INTERVENTION & ADVANCED SKILLS TRAINING
Contact the training team in order to schedule the CPI training for staff members who serve in high-risk areas of work.
ATTENTION. Executive and Regional Directors, Administrators, Instructional Specialists and other network leaders are encouraged to submit a request for CPI training. The goal is to ensure that each campus has a CPI team of diverse staff members whom are prepared to advocate and maintain care, welfare, safety and security of scholars at all times. Thank you in advance.
Nonviolent Crisis Prevention & Intervention Training (CPI) focuses on prevention and equips individuals with proven strategies for safely defusing anxious, hostile, or violent behavior at the earliest possible stage.
The philosophy of Care, Welfare, Safety and Security expands throughout the continuum of interventions necessary when working toward the reduction or elimination of restraint. The program realistically addresses the serious issue of restrictive intervention through careful assessment of risks and an evaluation of what may be considered “last resort.” The principles and techniques taught in CPI’s safety interventions (disengagement skills and holding skills) recognize the critical importance of staff confidence and their ability to safely respond to crisis situations. CPI Post-Crisis strategies assist staff teams in recognizing opportunities to learn prevention strategies in the aftermath of a crisis.
Highlights of CPI training include:
Reducing the risk of injury
Complying with legislative mandates
Meeting regulatory/accreditation standards
Improving staff retention
Minimizing exposure to liability
Promoting care, welfare, safety, and security

PHASE#1: Online Course (3 hours)
Phase I of the CPI training will actually begin 1-2 weeks prior to the classroom training. Each educator is required to complete the 3.5 hour CPI online course and to pass with 80% proficiency. The step should occur and be completed before the in-person training happens. Lastly, at the conclusion of the classroom experience, educators must pass the CPI summative assessment with an 80% proficiency score.
PHASE#2: In-Person Training (6.5 hours)
This will require educators to be fully engaged for 6.5 hours of an in-person professional learning experience. Educators should wear comfortable attire with appropriate shoes as they will be required to demonstrate proficiency in CPI holds and de-escalation techniques (i.e. verbal & nonverbal).
Educators will be working in close proximity and should be prepared to transition between chair, standing and floor exercises/simulations. Lastly, at the conclusion of the in-person classroom experience, educators must pass the CPI summative assessment (i.e. paper test) with an 80% proficiency score. Once each component of the process is completed, staff members will receive a signed blue card by the assigned trainer.
The training day begins at 8:00am and concludes by 3:30pm EST & CST. There is a 1 hour lunch break, that is typically appreciated due to the repetitious practice of the disengagements and holds (i.e. standing up and physical practice).
MATERIALS. Please feel free to bring post-it notes, highlighters, hand sanitizer, mints, masks or other materials to ensure you have a successful training experience. Also please bring your workbooks to the training session. It was UPS shipped to the main office at your school site.
