What is NJROTC?
It is the abbreviation of Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.
Bowie High School cadets are taught the Navy ciricculum through textbooks, rehearsals, in and out of class training.
How can a student join Bowie High School's NJROTC?
If a student is interested in enrolling into the program, they have the option to either speak to their specified counselor first, or they could speak directly to the program's instructor about their interest.
The student must NOT be a rising senior to join the NJROTC program.
Please talk to your counselors about enrolling into the program, there is a deadline as to when counselors stop dealing with schedule changes.

Is JROTC a required class to take?
It is NOT a required course to enroll in.
When a student is enrolled into the program, they must complete at-least three (3) years of JROTC to earn a CTE credit.
Are the students separated?
Female and male students are NOT separated during class periods.
However, depending on what NS level the student is, they will be put in classes that have students who are also on the same level.
Is it mandatory for students to join the military after graduation?
NO, the JROTC course is for students to experience learning the military.
The idea of joining will most definitely be suggested by the instructors but students are NOT obliged to join the armed forces at all.
Are there events/activities after school?
YES, if the student is a member of any of the teams, they are expected to be present and active during the after school practices.
If a student is interested in joining the teams, they would have to start attending the practices. Every and all team is open to welcoming new members. The more the merrier.
For the command staff, they are expected to attend every staff meeting hosted every Monday after school along with being available when needed.
For everyone else, there will be after school practices and preparations when leading up to an event such as the annual Homecoming Parade, AMI, Graduation and many more.
Are there any requirements and/or qualifications to join?
Have an overall GPA of 2.0 while being in a good academic standing.
JROTC is a CTE Program under PGCPS ciricculum regulations.
Otherwise, there are NO prior requisitions when joining NJROTC.

Are there any documents/files needed to join?
YES, before joining the program the student must have their annual physical examination complete.
There will also be a packet filled with other important documents that NEED to be filled out and completed.
The documents will be filed and stored within the Admin Department.

What are the costs on joining?
Upon joining, the student will need to pay $25 for their mandatory PT Gear.
Other than that, the only costs would be Field Trips, Limited Edition Merchandise, and Navy Ball tickets.
Who teaches the program?
There are two (2) instructors who teach and overlook the program (Capt. Anderson and Gy.Sgt. Hinton).
We also have the Command Staff, student cadets who guide and lead the rest of the battalion. Along with a couple of Academic Interns/Teachers Aids.
Do the students wear uniforms?
YES, there are specific days wherein students are told to wear their uniforms.
They are expected to be wearing their complete NSU uniforms during class inspection days (weekly).
Inspection days are usually Wednesday and Thursday while PT is usually on Fridays.
They are also expected to wear their PT Gear during the days their class have Physical Training.
The Supply Department is in charge of issuing uniforms to all cadets who enter the program.
Is there physical training included in the classes?
YES, physical training is implemented during the class periods on specific days.
There is also the Athletics Team wherein they work-out and and train for competitions.
Do students get recognition?
YES, within the program there are opportunities that every student can earn.

Bowie High School is permitted to select three (3) students to be given the opportunity to apply for the Annapolis Naval Academy.
Are there military scholarships?
YES, although Bowie High School has a Navy program, all students inside and outside of the program are allowed to earn a scholarship from ALL military branches (Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force/Space Force).
There are military recruiters who come to the school and speak to any student who have interests in the armed services.
