Weather is unpredictable; it can move quickly and out of nowhere or it can approach so slowly it seems stagnate. We want everyone attending to be safe. A meteorologist is onsite at all times monitoring the weather in the area. Once they inform the PGA of America about dangerous weather in the area, we will have the following signs posted on each video leaderboard:
The first sign to watch for is the yellow WEATHER WARNING sign.
The purpose of the WEATHER WARNING sign is to make you aware that dangerous weather could be coming, but we are still in good shape to play golf!
If you see the red PLAY SUSPENDED sign displayed, the PGA of America officials will blow a siren to suspend play and this means to seek shelter immediately.
Once play is suspended, the entire Championship grounds need to be cleared, no ifs ands or ‘putts’ about it. As a volunteer ambassador, we ask that you please help guide everyone to the nearest exit and then seek shelter yourself.
Players will not be allowed to play or practice on the golf course or at the practice facilities until it is determined by the PGA of America that it is safe to do so.
Once it is determined that the dangerous weather situation is no longer present, the PGA of America will make an announcement regarding if or when play will resume. Be sure to opt in to receive text messages in your volunteer portal (link below). The PGA of America and your committee chairs will send out text messages regarding resuming play and any further instructions. These messages will also be emailed to you so be sure to check both your text messages and emails during a WEATHER WARNING and PLAY SUSPENDED times.
In the event of dangerous weather and play is suspended, as a volunteer ambassador please go to one of the locations below, preferably back to your vehicle:
RECOMMENDED:
Your Vehicle
Permanent Building/Structure*
Volunteer Headquarters*
PGA Shops*
*These recommended places are subject to capacity limits
PLEASE BE SURE TO AVOID:
Metal Fences
Open Fields
Golf Carts
Hill Tops and High Places
Bodies of Water
Tall and/or Isolated Trees
If play is canceled for the rest of the day, the gates are closed and everyone (volunteers, contestants, caddies) will need to leave the Championship grounds. Please be sure to keep an extra eye on your email and text messages for updates regarding any future changes to your schedule. All Volunteer golf carts must be parked during suspended play.
So, the digital Leaderboards and Video Boards just posted the "Play Suspended" sign and you have also been notified by text or email that play has been suspended. The course is in an emergency evacuation which means all spectators must leave the grounds of the Championship. As a volunteer ambassador, your help with leading spectators off the grounds is appreciated.
There will be approximately 56 evacuation golf carts placed at the farthest part of the golf course from the Clubhouse (ie. Holes #3, 6 and 16). If an evacuation is needed, help direct contestants on those specific holes to the nearest golf carts. All other contestants should be advised that they need to walk back to the Player Locker Room.
Some things to keep in mind while helping evacuate the course:
Use caution and consider your safety first
Help communicate to all other spectators and assist in their evacuation
Once it is determined safe, spectators will be allowed to re-enter the Championship grounds before play resumes
A PGA Staff Member, your Chairperson, or your Captain will provide you with further instructions and updates. Be sure to check your email and test messages.
All Volunteer Ambassadors are looked at as great role models. Therefore, volunteers are to NEVER ask for autographs or take photos while on-shift or in the official volunteer uniform. For the consideration of the contestants, a “no autograph” approach will be enforced.
During practice rounds, cameras are allowed on course. During Championship Rounds, cameras will not be allowed on the grounds. (You may see cameras on Championship Rounds, but these are approved and marked as part of the media.) Remember, as an ambassador, please do not take any photos while on-shift and in your volunteer uniform.
Volunteers may use their mobile device at the Championship following the etiquette listed below:
Set your device to “Golf Mode”.
Don’t worry! It’s not an actual mode on your phone, it just involves silencing the ringer, notifications, alerts, camera flash and shutter noise on your mobile device.
Taking pictures and videos during Practice Rounds is allowed.
Taking pictures and videos during Championship Rounds is prohibited anywhere within 100 yards of competition.
Players, Caddies, Security and the PGA of America staff have the right to ask anyone onsite to put their phone away at any time.
The PGA of America staff reserves the right to confiscate your mobile device until you leave the Championship grounds if this mobile device etiquette is not followed.
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ VOL-STAR TIP ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Remember what was stated before, that all volunteer ambassadors are looked at as great role models. Therefore, volunteers should never take pictures or constantly be on a mobile device while on-shift or in the official volunteer uniform.
However, if you are not on shift and not wearing your official volunteer uniform, you may follow the above etiquette.
Your friend left their favorite golf sweater by the first hole and a Marshal turned it in to Lost & Found, now you need to retrieve it! All Lost & Found items will be taken to the Information Booth located at the Main Spectator Entrance.
Volunteers should refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol while on-shift and in uniform.
Please note: Smoking is not allowed in/on any temporary facilities.
