SketchUp is a great tool for students to learn the basic aspects of CAD software and 3D modeling. Using SketchUp, students can create 2-dimensional drawings and use the Push/Pull tool to add a 3rd dimension. While it may be an entry level CAD software, SketchUp has many features that will allow students to create parts, architectural models, and geometric drawings. With the ability to add color and texture (bricks, shingles, carpet) to designs, students can create some remarkable architectural renderings. Using the x, y, and z axis, students will also be able to create complex geometric drawings.
Designs created in SketchUp can be exported as .stl files, which can be opened and prepared in the Dremel or Ultimaker slicer software, and ultimately printed on our 3D printers.
