Hear what current and past student say about our Hospitality and Catering courses!
"I chose to study at Petroc mainly due to the course and facilities available. I particularly liked the sound of this course due to the content and large focus on the theory content (as well as practical). It was also partly due to the very modern facilities on offer (new kitchens etc) and being able to work hands-on in the Taw Restaurant.
Although I want to work in the food industry (bakery), I particularly enjoyed the food theory and management lessons. Last year I was chosen to go onto work experience abroad, in Gothenburg, Sweden which was a really special opportunity and one that I was very pleased to have taken part in.
I currently have a conditional offer to study Bakery Science and Technology at London Southbank University which is something I am really excited to begin. After uni, I plan on remaining in London and gaining further experience working in bakeries and patisseries, before one day having my own business.
Before you join this course, ensure that you have a strong interest in food. The course is extremely rewarding if you’re passionate about the subject, due to the content and opportunities on offer."

Hospitality & Catering - Apprenticeship (Standard)
Hospitality and Catering covers work in restaurants, hotels, cafés, pubs and with contract caterers - it also supplies other industries with food and drink. An apprentice in this field will need to have an outgoing personality and be prepared to work in an environment which is largely shift based.
Chef de Partie - Apprenticeship (Standard)
A chef de partie is responsible for running a specific section of the kitchen. This type of chef usually manages a small team of workers; which must be keep organised so that dishes go out on time and the work area remains clean and orderly. However in smaller kitchens a chef de partie may work independently as the only person in their section.
Commis Chef - Apprenticeship (Standard)
When you study for a commis chef apprenticeship, you will learn how to prepare food and carry out basic cooking tasks under the supervision of a more senior chef. The primary objective of the commis chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen, therefore having the opportunity to experience, consider and value each section with a view to choosing an area where they feel most inspired.

Did you spot former Petroc student Adam Cleal on The Great British Bake Off: The Professionals 2019!?
Adam started studying Catering part-time at Petroc Mid Devon when he was just 14 years old. He was part of the competition's winning duo working alongside his colleague from Palé Hall Hotel (and the show's first ever deaf contestant!) Sam Widnall.
They've both received a ton of wonderful comments from viewers online and also from the programme's host Liam Charles who said: "The judges thought the team in first place were in a different league across both challenges." Fantastic job guys!
Adam did an Apprenticeship in Food Production and Cooking here at Petroc in 2013, he then went on to study an NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery . Whilst at college Adam went to the Exeter Food Festival, which is where he was asked by Gidleigh Park to do some trial shifts with them. Adam was then offered a job at Gidleigh Park as he showed such potential on his trail shifts.
Since leaving college, along with appearing on Bake Off: The Professionals and working for Gidleigh Park, Adam has worked for Lymstone Manor, Pale Hall and is now of on a new venture to become Head Pastry Chef at Moorhall.
We are so proud of how much Adam has achieved since leaving Petroc and we were very pleased to welcome him back, to inspire and pass on his expertise to our students.
