The Union is run by students to support other students with all aspects of college life including clubs, social and fundraising events.
The Petroc Student Union, or ‘PSU’, is run by an Executive Committee of elected students who are here to implement new ideas, support student-led activities, and represent your voice. Each student on the committee has a different role, but together with our members are a Union of Students where individuals connect, have fun, build communities, share experiences, and make change.
The Union is here to make sure every Petroc student has the best student experience possible. So, keep up your hobbies or try something completely new. There’s always something social going on here at PSU such as Film Fridays, LGBT+ discussion group, inspirational talks, sports clubs, debating groups, and much more!
Being part of the Executive Committee is an excellent experience and will certainly help to enhance your CV. It is also a chance to get more involved with college life and make a difference for your fellow students.
I've found being involved in PSU, this year so rewarding. Our main goals are to make sure voices from across the college are represented, and to raise awareness for important issues through projects and campaigns. In January, we organised an event held on Blue Monday to try and de-stigmatise discussions about mental health with the help of the Samaritans charity, where students could grab a free cup of tea or coffee and a helpful leaflet. It was great to see so many people interested - there was a really positive atmosphere around the college that day.
Being involved in the SU not only helps you make change, but also make friends, too. Each member has their own specific role to focus their attention on, such as the Sustainability Officer, and we're always looking for new members to make our committee as wide and inclusive as possible. Working as a team to brainstorm new ideas in meetings is always fun, and allows everyone to have their say.
Beyond being an attractive addition to your CV, when you're part of the SU it feels like you're making a real difference to the students at Petroc, and enhancing your own college experience while you're at it.
