July Content

This month you can learn more about the different Travel and Tourism courses, learn more about our lovely team and conduct a research project into the various tourist destinations in the UK!

Listen to the amazing travel journeys our teaching staff have been on by working in the Travel and Tourism industry!

July Activity for you to try at home!

See below for some of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK:

UK Coastal Resorts

Padstow, England

Whitby, England

Portrush, Northern Ireland

Llandudno, Wales

North Berwick, Scotland

UK National Parks

The Lake District, England

The North Yorkshire Moors, England

The Cairngorms, Scotland

Snowdonia, Wales

The New Forest, England

Your first task is to read the information on the National Parks website here and give a definition, in your own words, of the term ‘National Park’.

Next, choose one destination from each list and answer the following questions for each destination.

  1. Find your destination on google maps, take a screenshot to add to your research.

  2. Name two built attractions within your destination - e.g. a theme park, zoo, aquarium, castle, etc. Give a brief description about each one.

  3. Give the names of 3 different types of accommodation providers within your destination. These could B&B’s, camp sites, holiday parks, hotels etc. How much would it cost for 2 adults to stay for a week (7 nights) in September? Find the price for each accommodation provider.

  4. Are there any activities that visitors could do for free at your destination? Please make a list.

The following websites will help with your research:

August Content

Welcome back to another instalment of information and activities from our Travel and Tourism team! This month we have loads of different activities to help you prepare for starting in September, no matter what Level you will be joining us on.

How has the Coronavirus Pandemic affected the Tourism industry?

Please complete the questions below on how the pandemic has impacted the tourism industry. Try to include as much detail as possible as this will aid your preparation on the course. Try and write a small paragraph for each question.

  • How has COVID19 affected your 2020 holiday plans?

Think about any types of holiday e.g. visiting friends and family, camping trip, a trip with friends or a package holiday abroad.

  • Research Devon: What are the current rules if a person (who doesn’t live in Devon) would like to come on holiday in Devon and stay overnight?

What is your view / opinion on the rules / laws surrounding tourism and travel in the UK?

Please ensure that you include the pros and cons e.g think about the economy, the job situation, the health of the locals and visitors as well as the loss of lives.

The History of Virgin Atlantic

This video (below) tells us how Virgin Atlantic started and the story is truly inspirational in terms of the speed of the growth and scope of the airline.

We would like you to consider the following questions:

1) When was Virgin Atlantic launched?

2) What did British Airways do to try and stop the growth and success of Virgin Atlantic?

3) Who did Virgin Atlantic sell 46% of their company to?

4) Have you flown with Virgin Atlantic? And what was your experience?

Please have a look and answer the questions below using the Visit Britain website. If you are able to use other resources such as travel magazines, news articles or other websites please feel free to use these for additional research.

What was the most popular attraction in the UK in 2018?

Number of inbound visitors to England in 2018?

How many people are employed within the travel and tourism industry?

How much income does tourism contribute to the UK’s Gross Domestic Product?

See you in September!
