An activity for you to try from home
In this short video (right), I demonstrate 5 different fire lighting techniques.
While watching, I want you to consider the advantages and disadvantages that each techniques possesses, try to link it to situations that you might find yourself in on the Outdoor Adventure course at Petroc.

Explore the Equipment you will need for the Outdoor Adventure course
Hi there,
Welcome to the second session to which is all about the equipment you’ll need for the Outdoor Adventure course!
Grab a sheet of paper and divide it into 2 columns with the titles below.
Item of equipment Got it / need to buy
Go on…. Get it now!!
As you watch the 4 short films (below) I'd like you to write down all the kit you need for the course and then after you’ve watched them all fill in the right hand column of what you’ve already got or what you need to get. Please make sure you try on any clothes you’ve already got just before the course starts in September to make sure that they still fit you!!
It is very important to be both warm and dry on the course for your safety and also so that you are comfortable and can concentrate and focus on the lessons - remember the outdoors is our classroom - it’s not just a fun day out...although it should be fun as well!!
Please don’t think you need to spend loads of money on kit - you don’t - but you do need to shop smart. Think about what budget you have and then prioritise - I’d spend more on a good wetsuit, waterproof coat, walking boots and socks - and less on everything else - some things have to fit really well to work (wetsuit/walking boots) and need to be tried on in a shop, other stuff could be bought online/ebay/facebook items for sale etc.
Locally: Reed Chillcheater (kayak/canoe) in Braunton, Tiki (wetsuits) in Braunton and No Sweat (land based kit) in Barnstaple will all give good advice and tell them you're on the course!
Online: Decathlon / Go outdoors both have good kit at cheap prices.
Exeter: Cotswolds at Darts Farm, Snow and Rock, Taunton Leisure will all have great boot fitters and good advice on everything else land based.
Remember they often do price match if you can find it cheaper online - and if you’re a member of the BMC or Canoe England you’ll get a discount.
Also keep an eye on our Facebook page (Petroc Outdoor Adventure) as occasionally students/ex-students sell off old kit….and I usually have a kit sale at the start of the course too!!
If you need any advice before you buy email me on: mike.bazley@petroc.ac.uk
Take care
Mike Bazley
