Teacher Academy

The Teacher Academy is for aspiring young educators. Students will explore what it's like to be a teacher in today's world. From lesson plans, state standards, educational philosophy and in-class experience, student will be fully immersed in the educational field. The program will cover educational careers, child development, community and family based programs and early childhood education.

EDU130 Intro to the Teaching Professions (Stark State College-3 college credits)

This course is for the college bound high school students who are considering a teacher career. Students begin instruction with an orientation to the teaching profession which includes subject knowledge, teaching techniques for all grade levels, classroom environment, a portfolio and technology skills. Coursework may also include CPR training for adults and children. Senior students will also be eligible to take the Para Pro test at the completion of the school year. Senior year students will work with four classroom teachers during internships to gain practical work-based experience and coursework will provide solid foundation for teaching careers. Senior students must furnish their own transportation to their school placement location. Successful completion of the Teacher Academy program may lead to college credits. This program offers 4 College Credit Plus courses worth a total of 12 college credits. Descriptions of the CCP courses follow.


EDU225 Exceptional Child (Stark State College-3 college credits)

This course is a study of theories and techniques used in assessment and instruction of students with learning disabilities, developmental challenges, and giftedness. Developmental traits of students with special needs are examined, and instruction is studied in light of the inclusion and least restrictive environment models. Five observation hours are required.


EDU223 Community and Family Based Programs (Stark State College-3 college credits)

An examination of community and family-based early childhood programs such as Head Start, Even Start and public special needs preschools. Adherence to mandates/guidelines, population served, socio-economic trends and factors, and how these programs differ from others are studied. Family relations and parenting skills emphasizing family involvement and empowering parents/guardians are studied and related to use in the community/family programs. Five (5) volunteer/observation hours are required.


EDU121 Intro to Early Childhood Education (Stark State- 3 college credits)This introductory course provides a general introduction to the field of early childhood education as well as related services that support children and their families, birth to age 5. This course is intended for those who are interested in the field of early childhood as well as those who are still undecided but are considering a career working with young children. Content in this course provides an overview of the profession of early childhood education and the role of the teacher/caregiver. It explores the history of early childhood education, major models and programs that support and/or educate young children, the theories and practices that are the foundations for such programs, and current issues in the classroom/child setting. Fifteen observation hours are required. CTAG approved.
