Healthcare Occupations and Technology Level I
The junior year of this course is basic to all healthcare careers and includes instruction in State Tested Nursing Assistant coursework and Medical Terminology. The STNA coursework focuses on demonstrating proficiency in 56 personal care skills needed to care for the needs of individuals across the lifespan, focusing on the elderly. To comply with nursing home standards, students may be tested for drugs or have a criminal background check conducted during the program. Also taught is first aid, CPR, common chronic diseases of the elderly and medical terminology used in the health field. Students will complete the seventy-five hour state approved nurse assistant training program and be eligible to sit for the state exam offered at Perry Health Academy at the end of the year. Students also learn leadership skills through membership in a student organization called HOSA.
The Human Anatomy course is designed to provide a good solid base of study into the structures and systems of the human body for students in career technical fields. The eleven body systems are thoroughly examined and specific applications to the fields of Health Occupations and Cosmetology are explored.
Healthcare Occupations and Technology Level II
The senior year of this program focuses on Clinical Medical Assisting (inclusive of phlebotomy training). College Credit Plus online Medical Terminology, and HOSA.
Clinical Medical Assisting builds on the skills learned during the junior year and places the focus on developing a professional demeanor and the skills necessary to gain employment in a physician’s office or clinic. Some of the skills taught will include assisting with the physical exam, taking an EKG, administering medication injections, and drawing blood samples (phlebotomy). During the second semester, internships will be facilitated at area physician’s offices during class hours. Students must provide their own transportation to these offices.
Medical Terminology is offered as a College Credit Plus course through Stark State College. Students will receive face-to-face instructor assistance and support throughout this semester course. All assignments and tests are completed through the Stark State Blackboard website.
The chemistry course emphasizes the structure of matter and the principles governing changes in the composition of matter. The course is conducted so that the understanding of how facts are derived is emphasized rather than the mere memorization of facts. Laboratory work is used to emphasize how scientific knowledge is acquired. The successful completion of chemistry is a necessity for any student pursuing a career in the area of science, nursing, medicine, or engineering.
