The Family Consumer Science program will provide students with an overview of major content areas of family and consumer as it pertains to everyday life. Students will learn about child development, basic cooking, personal and social wellness, college and career opportunities, interior and textile design and much more. These classes have hands-on lab opportunities to cook, bake and even sew your own pair of pajamas.

FAMILY CONSUMER SCIENCE CLASSES
750 Intro to Family and Consumer Science ½ Credit Grades 9,10 Semester Two mods
This beginning FCS class provides students with an overview of the major content areas of family and consumer sciences. Students will be introduced to interior design, child development, food and nutrition, financial literacy, and relationship concepts and how they relate to family dynamics. Students will understand the concepts of design through textiles for personal and home use. Class may be taken only once.
751 Child Development ½ Credit Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Semester Two mods
Students will study principles of child growth, development and behavior. An emphasis will be placed on the cognitive development of a child and sensory and motor skills. Additional topics will include childhood diseases, immunizations, theories of development, learning styles and evaluating childcare services.
752 Culinary Fundamentals ½ Credit Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Semester Two mods
Love to cook? Want to learn to cook? This class focuses on nutrition and food preparation. Students will learn about healthy food choices and demonstrate skills in basic food preparation methods. Students enrolled in this class will divide their time between the classroom and cooking lab to develop their skills in the kitchen. Students may take this class only one time. Classes are limited to 20 students due to safety in the food lab.
753 Personal Wellness ½ Credit Grades 9,10,11,12 Semester Two mods
In this course, students will analyze personal physical, emotional, social and intellectual growth for a healthy lifestyle. An emphasis will be placed on lifespan wellness by managing stress through relaxation, physical activity, and sleep. Additional topics will include human growth development, mental health management, domestic violence, STD’s, personal hygiene and preparing for emergency medical situations. This course may serve as a health credit.
754 College and Career Readiness ½ Credit Grades 9, 10 Semester Two mods
In this course, students will develop effective learning strategies and skills to provide a strong foundation for successful lifelong learning. Throughout the course, students will research careers and occupations, review postsecondary admissions qualifications and develop interviewing skills. Additional topics will include principles and techniques of professionalism, networking, conflict resolution, negotiation, leadership and entrepreneurship.
755 Interior Design, Furnishings, and Management ½ Credit Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Semester Two mods
(Offered in 2020-2021, 2022-23, 2024-25, 2026-27)
In this Family and Consumer Sciences career field course, students will examined design principles used in residential interiors. An emphasis will be placed on ergonomics, and psychological responses. Additional topics will include the selection and organization of furnishings, floors, and wall covering in living spaces, kitchens and baths.
756 Textile Design, Construction and Maintenance ½ Credit Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Semester Two mods
(Offered in 2019-2020, 2021-22, 2023-24, 2025-26)
In this course, students will study the visual appearance of fabric and fashion design. Students will identify, analyze, and apply production processes and techniques to textiles. Additional topics will include the maintenance and alterations of textiles products, including home interior accessories and garments.
