Band and Chorus offer students the opportunity to develop musical skills, confidence, and teamwork through performance. Students grow as musicians while building discipline, creativity, and leadership in a collaborative environment. Participation enhances school spirit, strengthens connections with peers, and provides memorable performance experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

Students that have a strong desire to sing, learn to sight read music, and work hard on the mechanics of singing are eligible for this course. All students must participate in three choral concerts in December, March and May. After school and a possible Saturday practice may occur prior to concerts. Attendance is mandatory.

Students admitted into Select Choir are by audition only in the month of January. Students will be exposed to a more rigorous rehearsal approach and exposure to a more challenging repertoire. Students must participate in three choral concerts each year. After school and Saturday practices may occur prior to concerts. This group also participates in Homecoming and Graduation.

Students must be a member of the Select Choir to audition for Ovation. Ovation is a Women’s acapella group and repertoire will be varied and complex. Ovation will perform at three school concerts as well as travel to evening and community events throughout the year. College credit is available through Seton Hill University.

Drama I provides the student with a background in theatrical principles and dramatic literature, with an emphasis on voice and movement. The course includes mime, improvisation, character development, monologue and scene work. There will be in-class performances and students will be made aware of local and in school opportunities to participate in the dramatic arts.

Members of this ensemble participate during the marching band season performing at parades, half time, and band shows, as well as two evening concerts in conjunction with the 11/12 Marching Band. Tuesday and Wednesday evening rehearsals occur during the summer and fall, as well as a mandatory band camp in August. Performances include each football game, various competitions and festivals, and Veteran’s Day and Holiday Concerts. All band students may be scheduled for extra music lessons during their study halls at the discretion of the band director. Members of this ensemble are expected to fulfill their commitment by participating in the Memorial Day parades and Graduation.

Members of this ensemble will rehearse literature ranging from serious concert band literature and symphonic transcriptions to contemporary, popular, and show repertoire. This ensemble will perform several evening concerts throughout the semester in conjunction with the 11/12 Symphonic Band, including Graduation and at a PMEA Large Ensemble Adjudication.

This is an advanced level jazz ensemble available to the serious musician. This course will incorporate all elements of contemporary jazz, with an emphasis on improvisation, as well as interpretation of multiple styles. Students will perform repertoire specific to the traditional big band as well as solos within the ensemble. Evening rehearsals and performances will be required of all students participating in this ensemble.

Students will learn basic music theory concepts including composition, form, melody, harmony, rhythm, style, notation and key, through a variety of techniques including listening examples, computer programs Finale 2015, Garage Band, and Practica Musica, and various classroom activities, culminating with students composing original compositions. Although no specific prerequisites are required, it is strongly recommended that students taking this course have previous instrumental or vocal music experience. Students will also learn basic music technology concepts through a variety of techniques including computer programs Finale 2015, Garage Band, and Practica Musica, and various classroom activities, culminating with the creation of original compositions to be premiered at an evening recital. Basic recording and mixing techniques, sometimes in conjunction with various video recordings, will be introduced. Although no specific prerequisites are required, it is strongly recommended that students taking this course have previous instrumental or vocal music experience.
