MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Pennsbury Physical Education department is to educate minds, develop healthy bodies, and promote positive attitudes towards lifetime physical activity, fitness, and sports skills. With a quality Physical Education program in place, each student will be empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible lifestyle choices that directly impact his/her health and well-being.
HEALTH, SAFETY & PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS OF STUDY
The intent of the physical education program is to instill in the student an awareness of the importance of physical activities, the desire to pursue activity throughout his/her lifetime, and the skills necessary to do this effectively. The health education program aims to impact health knowledge, which will enable the students to develop desirable and wholesome personal habits and attitudes and decision-making skills.
9/10 PE
This course provides students with instruction on fundamental skills and nutrition. This program encourages teamwork and building character through cooperative games, team-building activities, aquatics (9th grade), and team sports.
11/12 PE
This course provides instruction in the continued development of fitness skills as well as skills used in competitive and non-competitive physical activities. The selective program can include a variety of team sports, individual sports, fitness, recreational sports, dance, and adventure education.
APPLIED PE
Students will demonstrate the ability to use scientific principles to design and participate in a regular, moderate to vigorous physical activity program that contributes to personal health and enhances cognitive and physical performance in a variety of academic, recreational, and life tasks.
SPORTS NITE
11th and 12th grade students only may select this activity. Students who select Sports Nite as a part of their physical education program are required to complete one of the evening events during Sports Nite weekend. Activities include dance routines, relay races, and fitness activities.
The program at this level consists of six major units of instruction. They include: An Introduction to Wellness (with an emphasis on personal fitness), Emotional Health (with an emphasis on self-esteem, decision making, and motivation), Mental Health (with an emphasis on managing stress, anxiety, coping with loss, and suicide prevention), Social/Interpersonal Health (with an emphasis on establishing healthy and safe relationships and effective communication), Drugs and Alcohol (with an emphasis on the impact on oneself, family, and community and resources for coping), and Physical Health (with an emphasis on human growth and development and human sexuality.)
The program at this level consists of two major units of instruction. (1) Driver Education and Safety which includes 30 hours of classroom theory that will qualify the eligible student for a possible auto insurance discount upon the successful completion of the unit requirements. Emphasis in this unit will be on the driving task, interacting with traffic, driving in different environments and conditions, and responsibilities as a driver. (2) The purpose of the First Aid/CPR/AED Program is to help the student recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person until Advanced Medical help arrives.
12th grade students only may select this course. Students will discuss current trends and difficulties with human relationships, social issues and human sexuality based on a variety of seminar scenarios and discussions. Topics may include: mental/emotional health, current issues affecting health, sexual health and identity, teenage pregnancy, STDs, values, decision making, communication skills, community resources, and knowledge and exploration of self.
