by Olivia DeMinico
Nicole Makarewicz, a sophomore at PHS, has been paving her way to becoming nationally ranked for her performances and achievements in the sport of tennis. Nicole is ranked at number 7 for the Universal Tennis Rating, or UTR, and at number 10 in Massachusetts. She was also named Patriot League MVP and Patriot League All Star last year.
Nicole started playing tennis at 8 years old and has been going on to play for the past seven years. She stated, “I used to play with my grandfather all the time when I was younger out on the driveway and I found it really fun, and I also realized I was good at it.” She practices at the Kingsbury Club frequently and she is planning on continuing her tennis career in college.
Nicole shared how much tennis has impacted her life and allowed her to see that there is always room for improvement. She explained, “ There are no limits in tennis and you can always do better and improve on your skills.” Nicole also touched on how, since playing tennis, she has been able to form close bonds and create lasting friendships with her teammates.
Not only is Nicole a nationally ranked tennis player, she is also bilingual. Nicole is fluent in both English and Polish and she went on to speak about how it has been really beneficial in her life. She explained that, “because polish is not a very common language spoken in the United States, so my family and I can have private conversations even when we are out in public.”
Nicole is looking forward to the spring season and hopes for another great season like last year.
