NYSSMA

The Rockland County NYSSMA festival

May 17-18 at Suffern HS

NYSSMA (NY State School Music Association) offers an opportunity to perform for an adjudicator and receive helpful feedback.  Students who study with a teacher outside of school and wish to register for NYSSMA should consult with their instructor.

What is NYSSMA?

NYSSMA stands for New York State School Music Association, and is the abbreviation for festivals held by this organization for music students. Students will prepare and perform a solo and scales for a trained adjudicator who will give feedback on their musicianship.

Please complete this form and bring your registration fee checks to Mrs. Gill by February 2nd.

Who can participate?

Beginner, intermediate or advanced students grades K-12 can participate. Preparation will take some time and practice on a piece selected by your private teacher, who can guide you through the process.

Why participate in NYSSMA?

The NYSSMA Solo Evaluation Festival is a great opportunity for students to improve their playing. Students determine in advance what level of solo they should perform, and choose a solo listed in the NYSSMA manual. Participation in NYSSMA over the years may also provide them with eligibility for other programs.

How does NYSSMA work?

At the festival, you will spend 10 to 15 minutes performing for the judge who is a music teacher from another school district trained by NYSSMA to evaluate your solo, scales, and sight reading. The judge fills out an evaluation sheet highlighting aspects of your playing that are outstanding or need more work. It is a great way to get a “second opinion” on how a student is progressing in the band program as well as a great way to build confidence performing!
