Kindergarten students read "Ruby's Chinese New Year" which introduces the animals of Lunar New Year and the celebration of family traditions. After the book, students engage in a movement activity exploring the various animals of the Zodiac. We also practiced steady beat and identify same and different with musical phrases.
First Grade is using themes from Lunar New Year to create a rhythm composition project. We also watched a virtual presentation of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performing "Peter and the Wolf" which introduced the instruments of the orchestra as well as visited a wolf sanctuary.
Second Grade classes are taking part in Carnegie Hall's Musical Explorers program learning about Chinese Traditional Music with Qian Yi. Students learn two songs: "Gong Xi" and "Mo Li Hua".
Grades 3 and 4 students are learning music notation and completed a unit of study on Carol of the Bells. Videos from their class practice is in the students' Google Classroom.
