Have you ever been curious about how our oceans work and impact the rest of our planet? At the Applied Physics Laboratory – University of Washington (APL-UW), we conduct research to better understand our oceans, the species that live within them, and how they impact global biogeochemical cycles. We are currently seeking diverse undergraduate students, as well as students at community colleges and technical schools, interested in oceanography. Because APL-UW does all kinds of research, such as acoustics, sea-air interactions, polar science, ocean engineering, etc., any STEM field you may be studying could potentially be applicable to research conducted at APL-UW. Being a summer intern through the Diverse and Inclusive Naval Oceanographic Summer Internship Program (DINO SIP) at APL-UW will give you the opportunity to conduct your own research project, meet APL-UW scientists and researchers and other up-and-coming scientists, and learn about different career opportunities, both at APL-UW and elsewhere.
The Center for Life in Extreme Environments (CLEE) is a research center composed of 12 faculty, and and over 60 graduate and undergraduate students from Biology, Chemistry and Physics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at PSU. From Antarctic moss to hydrothermal microbes to fish that thrive in the desert, researchers in CLEE study organisms that thrive at under the most extreme conditions on Earth. As a transdisciplinary center, we recruit student researchers with a broad range of interests, including ecology, evolution, biochemistry, computer science, physics and engineering to develop new ways to study the genomics, chemistry, biodiversity, ecosystem structure/function, and physiology of organisms in extreme environments, with a forward eye to better understanding how life will function under new planetary extremes.
Born out of the civil rights movement and founded by leaders of color, Oregon MESA was founded in 1985 on the belief that access to a STEM education and exposure to successful role models can irrevocably change the course of a student’s life. Oregon MESA is a nonprofit organization, based at the Portland State University Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, that is committed to advancing equity by providing design-centered STEM programs in over 35 schools and organizations across Oregon. We are always looking for highly motivated PSU students to come work with us--we hire Mentors each September to work with our MESA Chapters during the school year to help students with their invention projects during weekly after school meetings, hosted at local schools in the Portland Metro Area by MESA Advisors.
