Kathy Maloney currently holds the position of “Accessible Services Specialist” at Sound Transit. She has been with Sound Transit since 2018 and has served in her current position since 2022. Kathy’s primary focus is on elements of the built environment and how to make (and keep) the environment along Sound Transit’s travel corridors as accessible as possible.
Kathy Maloney has a Masters’ degree from the University of Washington in Policy Studies. Within the Policy Studies program Kathy focused on housing policy and the need for more accessible housing. With a life-long love of interior design and a background with a variety of builder-related jobs Kathy’s path eventually led her to her work at Sound Transit.
One project that Kathy took the lead on at Sound Transit was to develop “Tactile ID Badges” for certain key roles represented out on the system. This was developed from dialogue with ST’s Citizen’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, when blind and deaf- blind members were asking for more assurance that their interactions with certain staff members on the alignment were authentic (and not with an imposter).
Kathy Maloney has long been an advocate for accessibility and design elements which help people to lead their most independent lives. One of her current projects at Sound Transit falls into that category, which is the development of tactile maps of the Light Rail stations. The tactile maps project is being done in conjunction with PSU’s Orientation & Mobility department.
In her downtime, Kathy Maloney enjoys getting outdoors; walking, biking, kayaking or occasionally horseback riding. She enjoys traveling and often uses that travel time to visit her grown children. She is also a ‘movie buff’ who would be your best phone-a-friend if you’re ever in a pinch to win a movie trivia contest.
