This page provides information on Practicum I, Practicum II, and Student Teaching—be sure to scroll down! It also outlines the feedback you can expect from your University Supervisor, Cooperating Teacher, and Instructor.
Write a minimum of three lesson plans this term using the lesson plan template provided. You may be encouraged to write more lesson plans by your university supervisor or cooperating teacher or may opt to do so to gain more practice.
Of the four lessons, write a mini unit plan comprised of two sequenced lessons.
Of the four lessons, write one for a student with visual impairment and an additional disability.
For each lesson, include components of the Explicit Instruction framework (Archer & Hughes, 2010). Use the VIL Lesson Plan Template.
Link your lesson plans for SPED 509 I within the Lesson Plan Documentation Google Doc. Make sure to share your lesson plans with your cooperating teacher and university supervisor at least one day in advance before a face-to-face or synchronous observation session.
The same requirements for Practicum I apply to Practicum II. Each candidate is required to have a minimum of three lessons and observations by the cooperating teacher and university supervisor. The observed lessons can overlap, which means that a minimum of three lesson plans/observations are required (all three observed by both cooperating teacher and university supervisor).
For those seeking initial licensure, the edTPA lessons plans cannot be evaluated for feedback by your cooperating teacher and university supervisor.
Submit all lessons to Candidate Field Experience Portfolio prior to meeting with your university supervisor and cooperating teacher.
Teacher candidates completing Student Teaching will revise their lesson plans for their final edTPA portfolio.
During the term, the cooperating teacher and university supervisor will observe the teacher candidate teach at least three times. At least one of the observations by the university supervisor and cooperating teacher must be face-to-face. The observations between the university supervisor and cooperating teacher may overlap. We recommend that these observations be spaced so that one happens near the beginning, one near the middle, and one in the final weeks of this course. We also recommend the coordination of 5 possible teaching sessions so that the university supervisor and cooperating teacher have ample opportunities to observe the teacher candidate working with students.
Following the teaching session, the cooperating teacher and/or university supervisor will meet and reflect on the teaching experience and debrief with the teacher candidate on what was learned and how the approach could be modified. The cooperating teacher and university supervisor will complete the Observation of Teacher Candidate form, which will post directly into your Lesson Plan Documentation Google Doc.
After discussing the feedback, include your own reflections on the experience using the prompts provided.
Cooperating teachers and university supervisors use the Observation of Teacher Candidate form in Google Drive to offer feedback on teaching lessons.
The seminar leader will grade the quality of the written lesson plans using the Lesson Plan Feedback form available in Google Drive. Final grades for lesson plans will be input into Canvas.
