From the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s to the mid-century Civil Rights Movement, this was an exciting time for Black Americans. Music, literature, scholarship, and activism in the Black community thrived. The end of this period saw the end to decades of segregation as well as the establishment of federal Civil Rights laws.

Paul Robeson
Paul Robeson
A Princeton native, Paul Robeson went on to be the third Black student enrolled at Rutgers University and its first Black football player. After earning a law degree from Columbia University, Robeson went on to win acclaim as both an actor and vocalist, while being an activist for civil rights.

Jimi Hendrix blended rock, soul, blues, and jazz to become one of the most influential musicians of his time. Though his professional career was short-lived before his death in 1970, he remains a musical icon whose innovative style of guitar-playing influenced countless musicians to come.
