The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded in response to the ongoing violence against Black people around the country. A 1908 deadly race riot in Springfield, Illinios was the final catalyst for the creation of the group. A group of 60 people took part in a meeting to discuss racial justice.
In 1910, W.E.B Du Bois headed the launch of the NAACP journal The Crisis, still published today.
The NAACP is the largest civil rights organization in the nation, with 2,200 chapters and over a half-million members and supporters throughout the US.
