Dred Scott was an enslaved man who took his decades-long fight for freedom all the way to the Supreme Court in the case Dred Scott v Sandford. After traveling to a “free” state with his captors, he justifiably believed that his freedom should have been granted.
Despite spending years fighting for his freedom, the Supreme Court ruled (7-2) that the American Constitution did not apply to free or enslaved Black people.
