This term, students attended class online as well as in person once a week with labs open for darkroom and digital work T, W & TH at SE and SY Campuses. It's been a great term and I am so impressed with the folks who've decided to push so hard this term with all of the challenges that ramping back into an in person instructional space, it also provides for incredible opportunty for collaboration and mutual support. These folks have dug in and created their own space, have mentored and supported each other as well as new photography students, and their work has evolved wonderfully throughout the term.
Students propose, develop & work closely with peers and instructor to create a portfolio of work worthy of transfer reviews, critiques with artists and galleries as well as personal professional development. We focus on mastery of the technical and professional practices with an emphasis on presenting one's work in the best light whether you're hoping to improve, speak or write about, exhibit or sell your Art.
Developing a Body of Work
We will study how a body of work is made, how it is collected, displayed and archive and question some of these systems of classification and 'gatekeeping' by museums, galleries and the established Art World.
Students will propose ideas, starting with existing work and establish goals and intentions for the term. The work will be driven by frequent peer critique, creative exercises, feedback, skills exercises and workshops in class and through completion of research, photo-shoots and assignments.
Professional & Artist's Skills
Practical skills in installation, exhibition and curation will be explored and practiced. Guest speakers, curators and registrars will lend their advice and experience to our classroom environment. Practicing artists are invited to come and speak to the class as well.
Community Based Learning, Field trips and Engagement
Getting our work out there - we will participate, coordinate and engage in critiques, in person and on-line salons, events and exhibitions and generate other creative ways to be involved professionally outside of our classroom space with events such as REFOCUSING: Free Salon-From-Anywhere by Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, OR and the MoCP in Chicago, IL ( just a couple of examples)
