Developing a Body of Work
We will study how a body of work is made, how it is collected, displayed and archive and question some of these systems of classification and 'gatekeeping' by museums, galleries and the established Art World.
Students will propose ideas, starting with existing work and establish goals and intentions for the term. The work will be driven by frequent peer critique, creative exercises, feedback, skills exercises and workshops in class and through completion of research, photo-shoots and assignments.
Professional & Artist's Skills
Practical skills in installation, exhibition and curation will be explored and practiced. Guest speakers, curators and registrars will lend their advice and experience to our classroom environment. Practicing artists are invited to come and speak to the class as well.
Community Based Learning, Field trips and Engagement
Getting our work out there - we will participate, coordinate and engage in critiques, in person and on-line salons, events and exhibitions and generate other creative ways to be involved professionally outside of our classroom space with events such as REFOCUSING: Free Salon-From-Anywhere by Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, OR and the MoCP in Chicago, IL ( just a couple of examples)
