Community Partners:
Filipino Bayanihan Center
Kasama Farms
During the spring of 2023, Taryn's ESR 171 class partnered with the Filipino Bayanihan Center and Kasama Farms in order to learn more about local food systems and culturally appropriate foods, and to engage in a CBL project where students could have some hands-on contributions to a local food system. This CBL project was threaded through our entire class. It started with a visit from Patricia at the Filipino Bayanihan Center, who talked about the center and how it helps to increase food justice for Filipinos in our community. We then visited a local Filipinx farm, Kasama Farms, where students learned about local farming processes and then got our hands dirty preparing some beds for planting. Lastly, students had a choice assignment to either volunteer with the Filipino Bayanihan Center or at Kasama Farms, or they could write a research paper on an aspect of food systems.
Community Partners: Books Through Bars
During the spring of 2024, students in Alissa's HE 251 course were given the option to volunteer with PDX Books Through Bars. Students responded to letters from incarcerated individuals by selecting suitable books from their library and packaging them for mailing. Students were provided with 4 topic options for reflection: Impact of Literature (ex: Discuss how literature can contribute to education, mental health, and personal growth for incarcerated individuals); Community-Based Learning: Definition, Importance, and Impact; Censorship in Prison: Balancing Security and Rights; and Decolonizing Criminology.
