The title of the article: Structured Literacy and Typical Literacy Practices: Understanding Differences to Create Instructional Opportunities.
The article follows a fictional elementary-level special education teacher, Isabelle Rowe, who is beginning her second year of teaching. A third grader named Curtis has been assigned to her caseload after being identified with dyslexia at the end of second grade. Isabelle explores the differences in structured literacy versus typical literacy and how these differences may impact Curtis and as well as other students with reading challenges. Delaware Valley School District is one of eight school districts in the state of Pennsylvania who serve as participating research sites engaged in the Pennsylvania Dyslexia Screening and Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program. The early literacy intervention and dyslexia pilot program was established through Act 69 of 2014 (see below). In this webcast, Dr. Schaffer and Lori O’Malley share Delaware Valley’s School District experiences and student outcomes resulting from the district’s participation with the dyslexia pilot from the 2015 school year to present day.
“Act 69 of 2014, the Dyslexia and Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program became effective on June 26, 2014. The Act provides that: Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) will establish an early literacy intervention and dyslexia pilot program to provide evidence-based early screening using evidence-based intervention services for students with potential risk factors for early reading deficiencies and dyslexia, such as low phonemic awareness, low letter and symbol naming and inability to remember sequences.”
