Where Do I Even Start? Goal Writing for DeafBlind and Complex Learners

Writing individualized, developmentally appropriate goals for students who are deaf-blind, medically complex, or significantly behind grade-level expectations can feel daunting. Educators working with students at the early stages of cognitive and communication development, regardless of chronological age, are often left without adequate guidance or resources to craft goals that are both meaningful and measurable. This session offers a practical framework for approaching goal writing from the ground up.

Participants will explore how to take a broad, long-term goal and systematically break it down into the foundational prerequisite skills that lead there; creating a roadmap that makes it possible to assess where a student truly is, identify the next appropriate skill to target, and write goals with confidence and purpose. Participants will also explore strategies for collaborating across disciplines so that goals work together rather than in isolation, shifting from each provider writing independently within their own domain to a more holistic approach that keeps the whole student at the center of the IEP. Attendees will leave with a replicable process they can apply across developmental domains and skill areas, empowering them to write goals that reflect each unique student.

Conversations that Matter:  Responding to the Impacts of Trauma on School-Based Performance

The collective trauma of a global pandemic shifted the work climate for school-based providers.  For children, experiences of trauma limits development in areas including cognition, attachment, emotion regulation, physiological regulation, sensory processing, and motor abilities.  Research does, indeed, indicate that children born during the pandemic are at a higher risk for delays in these domains.  Thus, more children have IFSPs and IEPs at the same time as when systems are experiencing shortages of educational, traditional mental health,  ancillary support providers. This session will begin with a review foundational knowledge in trauma and implications for participation, performance, and behavior and in education settings.  We will also discuss what is happening in schools that works and is not working.   The remaining focus of the session will be speaker empowerment and active dialogue with participants with clear, evidence-based action steps for responding and intervening with students impacted by trauma.

Transportation and Transition:  How Do We Get There Now?

Transportation is a critical component of community participation, employment, education, and overall independence for transition-age youth and young adults with developmental disabilities. This presentation will provide an overview of community mobility planning and transportation supports that promote independence and successful transitions to adulthood. From Preschool to School Age: Understanding Changes in OT, PT, and SLP Eligibility and Service Delivery

The transition from preschool special education to school-age services represents a significant shift in how occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP) services are determined and delivered. This training examines the differences between preschool services (ages 3–5) and school-age services (ages 5–21) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Participants will explore how eligibility and service decisions evolve as students enter kindergarten and progress through their school years. While young children may receive related services to support developmental delays and participation in early learning environments, school-age eligibility and service intensity are increasingly driven by the student's educational needs, access to the general education curriculum, and the requirement that services support the student's ability to benefit from specially designed instruction.

Supporting Related Service Providers in Transition Planning: What Supervisors Need to Know

Supervisors of related services providers are often called upon to answer questions about their staff's role in secondary transition planning. This session is designed to equip supervisors with the knowledge and resources needed to confidently guide providers in understanding their responsibilities within the transition process.
