Educational Progamming in Non-Educational Placements

Students with IEPs who are placed in residential or other non-educational settings often have multiple entities involved in ensuring that their educational needs are appropriately addressed. Chronic Absenteeism and School Refusal:  Tips for Increasing Engagement in School

This session will distinguish chronic absenteeism from school refusal and examine four functions that may contribute to school refusal: avoidance of negative affect, escape from aversive social or evaluative situations, attention seeking, and access to tangible reinforcers outside of school. Teach It Before You Need It:  A Proactive Skills Approach For Emotional Support Educators

Everyday classroom routines can create recurring situations in which problem behavior may develop: when activities end, tasks become difficult, students must wait, hear “no,” share or yield, or adjust to changes. Conversations that Matter:  Responding to the Impacts of Trauma on School-Based Performance

The collective trauma of a global pandemic shifted the work climate for school-based providers.  For children, experiences of trauma limits development in areas including cognition, attachment, emotion regulation, physiological regulation, sensory processing, and motor abilities.  Research does, indeed, indicate that children born during the pandemic are at a higher risk for delays in these domains.  Thus, more children have IFSPs and IEPs at the same time as when systems are experiencing shortages of educational, traditional mental health,  ancillary support providers. This session will begin with a review foundational knowledge in trauma and implications for participation, performance, and behavior and in education settings.  We will also discuss what is happening in schools that works and is not working. The remaining focus of the session will be speaker empowerment and active dialogue with participants with clear, evidence-based action steps for responding and intervening with students impacted by trauma.

Preschool to School Age: Understanding Changes in OT, PT, and SLP Eligibility and Service Delivery
