Welcome to Financial Algebra! This week will be spent on getting comfortable with Google Classroom and other educational technology that your child will need for online learning, such as Google Docs, Sheets, Forms and Slides, Quizlet, Khan Academy, Edpuzzle and Zoom. Please make sure to read over the syllabus carefully. If you have questions or concerns about it, feel free to email me.
This week we will start discussing business organization and will learn important terminology when it comes to discussing sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. There will be a vocabulary quiz, so pay close attention to your grades in PowerSchool.
We will dive into terminology on the topic of stock markets and will learn words like stock trade, volume, closing price, net change, after-hours trading, etc. There will also be algebra problems involved connecting the movement of a stock price with the percent change formula. This week, we will continue exploring the subject of the stock market, specifically learning about stocks by analyzing charts, such as linear graphs, bar graphs and candlestick charts. We will also review what we have learned so far and take a quiz on the first three sections of the stock market unit. Progress reports are also coming out this week, so please be on a lookout for those.
Monday, students will take a quiz on sections 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3. They will show mastery of algebra involving business organization, reading and interpreting stock quotes and analyzing various stock charts. After the quiz, we will move on to the second half of the unit on the stock market and start discussing stock transactions, fees and investment portfolios. Late work is still being accepted for full credit. Please keep in mind, the first trimester ends on December 4.
Our unit on the stock market is coming to an end this week. We will finish up discussing stock transaction fees, capital gain and loss scenarios and the benefits of dividends and bonds as well as any other important math involved in investing. We will have a quiz once the sections 1-7 and 1-9 are finished. Late work is still being accepted for full credit. Please keep in mind, the first trimester ends on December 4.
This week is all about the Stock Market Project. We will be purchasing (with virtual money) stocks that students have chosen and researched last week. We will also learn about different types of investments and work on creating an investment portfolio. The project will be due by the end of the week or right at the beginning of the next one.
We will be talking about checking accounts, savings accounts and simple interest this week. We will complete an activity which will be a simulation of an online checking and savings account. Stock Market Projects are still being accepted late. Please keep in mind that the middle of the trimester is January 29, so late work should be submitted as soon as possible.

We practice using the continuous interest formula and do some application word problems involving the formula. After becoming comfortable with the compound interest problems, we will have a practice quiz and a quiz on this topic. Please keep in mind that Trimester 2 ends on March 19.
This week, we will work on "Buying a House" project. Students will use Zillow.com to pick out their dream home and will go through multiple calculations that come with being a home owner. They will calculate taxes, mortgage, maintenance, repairs, required salary to buy their dream home, etc. Finally, students will present their work as a poster or a PowerPoint. Please keep in mind that Trimester 2 ends this week.
