From CollegeBoard.org: AP Calculus AB is designed to be the equivalent of a first semester college calculus course devoted to topics in differential and integral calculus. AP Calculus AB focuses on students’ understanding of calculus concepts and provide experience with methods and applications. Through the use of big ideas of calculus (e.g., modeling change, approximation and limits, and analysis of functions), the course becomes a cohesive whole, rather than a collection of unrelated topics. The course requires students to use definitions and theorems to build arguments and justify conclusions.
This course is designed to prepare students for the AP Calculus AB Exam, a 3-hour 15-min. proctored test facilitated by the College Board. Successful completion of AP Exams can earn college credit and the opportunity to skip introductory courses in college (credit policies vary by school). At the very least, taking this class gives students the chance to preview college-level work in a familiar setting.
