In the beginning of the book, Lucille is a hard-working and stubborn mom who just wants her daughter Matilda to have a good life. In the middle of the book, Lucille is missing; Matilda has no idea where she is. But finally, at the end of the book, Lucille comes home; she is weak and skinny, but she is alive. Lucille can no longer run the coffeehouse, but thats ok because Matilda has it going great.
