Park families —
We are looking forward to the upcoming Winter Break and know that many of you are making plans to gather with family and friends, and perhaps to travel. In keeping with the spirit of our Community Agreement, we wanted to connect with you today to communicate expectations that will allow us to return to campus safely following break, and to provide details regarding the school schedule for the week of January 3.
Please read this entire message as your travel and gathering choices and/or the timing of your child’s return to campus following the break may be affected by the expectations below.
Summary:
All families should follow CDC guidance regarding travel and gathering. Quarantine may be required according to the guidance, so please read the details below.
In order to safeguard the entire community, school will be remote on Monday, January 3, Tuesday, January 4, and Wednesday, January 5. We plan to be on campus on Thursday, January 6.
All students (and employees) will take a Covid test prior to returning to campus. The PCR test should be taken no earlier than Wednesday, January 5. Park will run free, on-campus testing that day. Details and a registration link below.
As always, we will be monitoring the latest public health developments and data — including information about the Omicron variant — and can/will adjust our plans accordingly.
CDC Guidance
All members of our community — vaccinated and unvaccinated — should be mindful while traveling or gathering with family and friends not part of their household and should follow CDC recommendations regarding masking and distancing.
Specific to Winter Break and the likelihood of travel and/or gathering, here is some helpful guidance in line with CDC recommendations for unvaccinated individuals:
Transportation. Using mass transit (trains, planes, buses) will require a full seven-day quarantine and testing for a student who is not fully vaccinated.
Hotels. Staying in a hotel will require a full seven-day quarantine and testing for a student who is not fully vaccinated.
Masks/Distancing. Unvaccinated students not following Park School protocols (remaining masked and remaining distanced) while among other unvaccinated individuals (at mass gatherings; with friends, cousins, etc.) will require a full seven-day quarantine.
When in doubt, follow Park School protocols when among people in a congregate setting. Students who are not fully vaccinated, in particular, should use caution when around other unvaccinated individuals — masking and distancing in line with the protocols we implement in the school setting.
If you have any questions and/or would like to discuss a particular situation, please contact Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley (kackley@parkschool.net or 410.339.4149).
In the event your child will need to quarantine according to the guidance above, please contact your division principal and Katie Ackley by Wednesday, December 15 to let them know of your plans. Of course, if your plans change over break, please reach out.

The Return to Campus
We have built a return-to-campus schedule to accommodate school-wide testing prior to coming together in our buildings. In order for Covid testing to be optimally effective, it should take place 3–5 days following possible exposure.
To best safeguard the entire community, school will be remote on Monday, January 3, Tuesday, January 4, and Wednesday, January 5. On-campus testing will take place on Wednesday, January 5. The school will be provided with the test results and we will return to campus and regular schedules on Thursday, January 6.
You will hear from your division principal(s) regarding the schedule for the remote days — but know that Wednesday, January 5, will be asynchronous (no real-time instruction) in order to accommodate school-wide Covid testing that day. See below for testing details and a link to sign up.
Please note, the expectation is that students will be learning from home beginning on Monday, January 3. Travel plans should not be extended.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Testing Prior to the Return to Campus
All students (and employees) will take a Covid test prior to the return to campus. The PCR test should be taken no earlier than Wednesday, January 5 — and we will run free, on-campus testing that day.
Testing by Capital Diagnostics will take place in Blaustein Gym 1 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Please sign up for a time slot using the link below.
Register one child at a time.
Use your child’s name for the First and Last Name fields;
Include your (parent/guardian) email address.
Click HERE to sign up for on-campus Covid testing on January 5
On the test date, park in the Athletic Center lot and follow the signs to the Blaustein Gym from the Athletic Center courtyard.
If you choose to test at another source, please email Katie Ackley — a negative result must be submitted prior to returning to campus.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Please remember, the measures that we are taking do not negate the necessity to follow CDC guidance.
If you have any questions regarding Park’s health and safety protocols, please reach out to covidresponseteam@parkschool.net and we will work to respond as soon as possible.
We thank you for taking steps to ensure the health and well-being of our community — and for doing your part to curtail the spread of the virus.

Park families —
Please read as your travel choices and/or your child’s return to campus following the Thanksgiving holiday may be affected by the expectations below.
Given that travel and gathering with larger groups are possibly part of your Thanksgiving holiday plans, we write today to reiterate the CDC guidance that we directed families to in the October 29 message: Important Health and Safety Information and Reminders.
Summary of CDC Guidance
(Please take special note of the recommendations for those not fully vaccinated.)
Delay travel until you are fully vaccinated.
Check your destination’s COVID-19 situation before traveling. State, local, and territorial governments may have travel restrictions in place.
Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth is required in indoor areas of public transportation (including airplanes) and indoors in U.S. transportation hubs (including airports).
Do not travel if you have been exposed to COVID-19, you are sick, or if you test positive for COVID-19.
For those that are NOT fully vaccinated (i.e. two weeks after the final dose) but must travel:
Get tested with a viral test 1-3 days before your trip.
Self-quarantine and get tested after travel:
Get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after returning from travel.
Stay home and self-quarantine for a full 7 days after travel, even if you test negative at 3-5 days.
If you don’t get tested, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.

In line with the Park School Community Agreement, we expect all of our families to follow CDC recommendations.
In the event your child needs to quarantine according to the guidelines above, please contact your division principal and Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley (kackley@parkschool.net) by Friday, November 19.
The CDC offers guidance regarding activities, gatherings, and holidays here.
All members of our community — vaccinated and unvaccinated — should be mindful while gathering with family and friends not part of their household.
We must acknowledge that parents across the school population are approaching questions and concerns from very different places, and we are hearing many points of view. Here, we want to address a few issues that parents have asked about specifically, and we know are on a lot of parents’ minds...
Transportation. Using mass transit (trains, planes, buses) will require a quarantine and testing for an unvaccinated student.
Hotels. Staying in a hotel will require a quarantine/testing for an unvaccinated student.
Mass gatherings. Unvaccinated students participating in a mass gathering (indoor concert, movie, etc.) will need to quarantine/test.
Masks/Distancing. Unvaccinated students not following Park School protocols (remaining masked and remaining distanced) while among other unvaccinated individuals (friends, cousins, etc.) will require a quarantine.
When in doubt, follow Park School protocols when among people in a congregate setting. Unvaccinated students, in particular, should use caution when around other unvaccinated individuals — masking and distancing in line with the protocols we implement in the school setting.
If you have any questions and/or would like to discuss a particular situation, please contact Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley (kackley@parkschool.net or 410.339.4149).

The ability to come together as a school community each day is a privilege. We are all working so hard to maintain our ability to come to school with minimal disruptions due to large scale quarantining, and I thank you, our employees, and our students for everything that you and they are doing. We must continue to remember that there are vulnerable individuals among us, those who are immunocompromised or living with someone who is immunocompromised, as well as those who are not yet eligible for the level of protection that a vaccine can provide.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Testing Following the Holiday
While there will be no on-site surveillance testing during the Thanksgiving week, our weekly testing program will resume on Thursday, December 2, and Friday, December 3.
We are not offering testing earlier in the week due to the fact that, to be optimally effective, a Covid test is recommended to take place three to five days after possible exposure. If we test prior to that window, we may miss asymptomatic cases.
Should you need to keep your child home (quarantine) following the Thanksgiving holiday, please know that it will be possible to test on-site on Friday, December 3 at 8 a.m. Please make arrangements with Katie Ackley.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We will work with any family who feels the need to, or is required to, quarantine their child — this includes families who do not feel comfortable sending their child to school immediately following the holiday weekend. Again, notify your division principal and Katie Ackley. Your principal will then be in contact regarding work for the week. When it is feasible and the learning opportunity would be meaningful, teachers can at their discretion have students join virtually. Otherwise, they will provide independent work.
If you have any questions regarding Park’s health and safety protocols, please reach out to covidresponseteam@parkschool.net and we will work to respond as soon as possible.
Thank you for paying special attention to our responsibilities to one another during the time ahead as the risk of Covid spread increases due to travel and multi-household gatherings.
—Dan and Katie
Park families —
First, thank you for your efforts today as we adapted to the weather conditions. I appreciate our entire community being so responsive to the need to change our dismissal plan. Remember that the morning drop-off pattern will be different beginning Monday, November 1. Full details here.
As we approach the holiday season — starting this weekend with Halloween and heading into Thanksgiving and the winter holidays — when the pull of social gatherings, travel, and celebration is strong, I write with an important reminder for our school community. The pandemic is still very much ongoing. As such, and despite any pandemic fatigue or desire to believe that it is almost past us, we must act responsibly and take steps to protect the health and well-being of all of our community members.
The ability to come together as a school community each day is a privilege, and it has been an incredible year thus far. We are all working so hard to maintain our ability to come to school with minimal disruptions due to quarantining, and I thank you, our employees, and our students for everything that you and they are doing. We must continue to remember that there are vulnerable individuals among us, those who are immunocompromised or living with someone who is immunocompromised, as well as those who are not yet eligible for the level of protection that a vaccine can provide.
The commitment we have made to one another is outlined in the Park School Community Agreement. At this point in the school year, I encourage you to review the agreement with your family, framed by the understanding that this is a collective effort that puts the health and well-being of others ahead of our own individual pursuits.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Important Reminders (particularly important in light of potential upcoming travel and holiday gathering):
Daily screening. Please closely monitor for symptoms as outlined in the Magnus app. This is not an administrative exercise, but an important step in ensuring the health of the community. If your child exhibits any symptoms, keep them home and contact the school nurse.
Covid exposure. Any known exposure to a person with Covid should be treated seriously. Keep your child home and notify the school nurse immediately.
Masking and distancing. Masking and distancing are effective risk mitigation strategies. In congregate settings, masks should be worn and adequate distancing should be observed.
Vaccinations. Proven to be highly effective at reducing the risk of transmission and reducing the severity of illness, we strongly encourage eligible students to receive the Covid vaccine.
Like you, we are very excited that the Food and Drug Administration today has authorized Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine for emergency use in children 5 to 11. We are currently finalizing plans for an on-campus vaccine clinic to administer shots at Park, and will have more information to share with parents as soon as it is confirmed.
Travel and Gatherings with Family/Friends. The CDC offers guidance regarding travel for fully vaccinated (two weeks after the final dose) and unvaccinated people. Please reference these resources if your holiday (or other) plans involve travel, and follow the guidance provided. Note the expectations for unvaccinated travelers.

Testing Following the Holiday
While there will be no on-site surveillance testing during the Thanksgiving week, our weekly testing program will resume on Thursday, December 2, and Friday, December 3.
The on-campus surveillance testing that we have integrated into our Thursday/Friday school days has been an invaluable tool in identifying asymptomatic cases. In the event your child misses a weekly testing appointment, contact School Nurse Katie Ackley (kackley@parkschool.net) and plan to get a PCR test completed before sending your child to school the next week.
Should you need to keep your child home (quarantine) following the Thanksgiving holiday, please know that it will be possible to test on-site on Friday, December 3 at 8 a.m. Please make arrangements with Katie Ackley.

Flu Shot Reminder — October 31 Deadline Approaching
Remember that each student is required to have an influenza vaccine each school year — this is of particular importance during the course of the pandemic. If your child participated in the on-campus flu vaccine clinic administered by CVS, you do not need to upload your record to Magnus — our nursing office has already done so. If your child received the vaccine elsewhere, please submit proof of vaccination via your child’s Magnus Health portal by October 31. If you have any questions, please contact Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley (kackley@parkschool.net).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I hope that our community members not only prepare to enjoy holidays with family and friends, but will also continue to take the steps necessary to protect one another as the pandemic continues. We will work with any family who feels the need to, or is required to, quarantine their child. In the event your child needs to quarantine, our teachers and principals will be in contact regarding synchronous/asynchronous learning.
Thank you for all you do to keep your family and our community healthy and safe.

Park Families,
Next week — on September 9 and 10 — we will begin our regularly scheduled on-campus COVID testing for all students and employees. We are pleased to integrate COVID testing into the school schedule to make it as easy as possible for our families and employees going forward.
Testing is scheduled for Thursdays, 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m.–1:30 p.m. each week school is in session, and will take place in the Blaustein Gym 2. Lower and Middle School students will be taken to the gym at designated times by their teachers; Upper School students will have time in their schedules to complete their test over the course of the two days.
In the event that testing on Thursday or Friday is not possible due to school closure, etc., we will let you know the adjustment to the plan.
Please read the details below.
All students and employees will be tested each week.
Each student and employee should be “pre-registered” using the form below. If you completed the form for the on-campus testing that took place before school started, you do not need to fill out the form again.
Testing will be integrated in to students’ schedules — so there is no need to sign up for a time slot.
There is no cost to individuals being tested.
In the event a student is absent for a weekly test, or does not get tested on campus for any other reason, the family must submit a negative PCR test by 5 p.m. on Sunday before the start of the school week.
Students and employees who participate in on-campus testing do not need to upload the test result to Magnus Health each week going forward.
Thank you for partnering with us in the work of monitoring for COVID-19 and taking this important step to make it possible to come together as a school community.
In the event that testing indicates asymptomatic positive cases in the community, we will follow the guidelines prescribed by the Maryland Department of Health and Maryland State Department of Education along with guidance from the Baltimore County Department of Health.
It's been a wonderful start to the new school year — weather interruption aside. Have a good long weekend. L’shana tova to those who celebrate. And we look forward to being together again next week.
— Dan

Complete the pre-registration form HERE as soon as possible (and no later than Wednesday, September 8).
If you have already completed this pre-registration form for our earlier testing date, you do not need to resubmit.

Park is partnering with Personalized Medicine Care Diagnostics (PMCDx) to administer the on-campus anterior nasal swab PCR tests. PMCDx uses an individual's health insurance to cover the cost for this service with a waived set-up fee. There is no other associated fee involved with this service as the co-payment and/or deductible will be waived for the patient as well. If insurance rejects or fails to pay for individuals, PMCDx utilizes State funding resources for school screening programs to cover the cost of the test. There will be no cost to the individuals being tested for this service.
The results will be shared in 24-48 hours via email, text message, or both if you provide both forms of contact information. Please provide parental email and cell phone contact information on the registration form. (Results will also be shared directly with Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley.)
If you receive a positive result, please contact Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley (kackley@parkschool.net or 410.339.4149) as soon as possible.

Testing Off-Campus:
If an individual does not test on campus, a negative PCR test result must be uploaded to Magnus Health account by each Sunday evening at 5 p.m. The test should not be administered before the prior Thursday. Please contact Director of Nursing Services Katie Ackley in the event you plan to test off campus — and please notify her directly of the result in addition to uploading the result to Magnus.
(Magnus Health FAQ HERE.)
To upload your child’s off-campus test result in the Magnus app, follow these instructions:
Take a photo/screenshot of the results
Open the Magnus Health app and go to “Student Health Tracker”
Go to COVID-19 PCR Test Screening
Go to Submit Requirement
Add photo to “add file”
Tap the filename to select it
Press Submit and it should say “saved successfully”
Good afternoon, Park families —
Today, we welcomed our new faculty and staff members to campus – what an impressive group! Our full faculty will join them later in the week as we continue our work preparing and outfitting classrooms, art spaces, labs, playgrounds, courts, fields, and community-gathering places in anticipation of your child’s arrival next week.
The spread of the Delta variant is, of course, at the forefront of the minds of our administrative team and we are closely monitoring regional data, guidance from local health authorities, the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and our own expert advisory group. Below, please find updated measures we are implementing, along with some helpful health and safety reminders in advance of the start of school.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Again this year, I am profoundly grateful for the counsel provided by the members of our expert advisory group. Thank you to Tom Inglesby, M.D., Director, Center for Health Security of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Senior Advisor for COVID Response at the US Department of Health and Human Services; Beth Blauer, Associate Vice Provost for Public Sector Innovation and Executive Director of the Centers for Civic Impact at Johns Hopkins; and Brian Garibaldi, M.D., Director, Johns Hopkins Biocontainment Unit and Director of the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Precision Medicine Center of Excellence. Tom, Beth, and Brian, all of whom are parents of current Park students, are helping us navigate the complexities of the ongoing pandemic with a keen interest in, and understanding of, our community. Their expertise in public health, demographics and data, and medicine are invaluable in helping the school administrative team plan and adapt. Thank you, Tom, Beth, and Brian – and to all of the members of the parent community who share expertise, insights, resources, and questions. Open communication and a strong partnership with our parents is, and will be, an essential component in realizing the potential in this coming year.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Masks
All students, employees, and parents and other visitors will be required to wear a mask while inside Park buildings (except while eating/drinking with appropriate distancing).
Outdoors, Pre-K through Grade 6 students will remain masked; students in Grades 7-12 will be masked when outdoor activities don’t allow for appropriate distancing.
Last year, our students did a fantastic job in adhering to our masking protocols on campus. We will reinforce these protocols again this year, providing support and encouragement in a range of settings. At lunch and during snack times, we will work with students to ensure that they maintain appropriate distancing while maskless.
For all students, we will look for opportunities for outdoor “mask breaks” over the course of the day.
Weekly Testing
As noted in my message on Friday, we have scheduled on-campus testing for our students and employees prior to the start of school. If you haven’t done so already, sign your child(ren) up for an August 27 testing appointment here. Full information regarding August 27 testing is available here.
In light of the spread of the Delta variant, we will be aggressively monitoring for infection among our entire school population – regardless of vaccination status – with weeklysurveillance testing to begin September 9. Currently, we are working to build the tests into students’ weekly schedules to make it a convenient and efficient process that does not require a separate trip to campus. More details to come. We are using the same testing firm (PMCDx) that we are employing for back-to-school testing; therefore, after you complete the PMCDx pre-registration form for your child one time, you will not need to do so again.
Morning Screening
All students (Pre-K through 12) and employees will be required to complete a morning health screening by 8 a.m., prior to coming to school each day, and all families and employees will signal completion via the Magnus Health online app prior to entering the building or boarding school buses. Please see our Magnus Health FAQ page for help with accessing the app. Those who have a fever above 99.5º, have flu-like symptoms not associated with allergies, and/or have had contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 should not come to campus and should inform our school nurse (kackley@parkschool.net). All CDC and local health department guidance will be followed.
If a student or employee comes into contact with a person who has COVID, please contact the school nurse before coming to campus.
When in doubt, please check in with our nursing office.
Note: All students who are participating in on-campus activities prior to the start of school — orientation, athletics, arts, student government, etc. — should screen each day prior to coming to campus.
Vaccinations
The school strongly encourages all age-eligible students be vaccinated. Once fully vaccinated (two weeks after the final shot), please upload your child’s COVID vaccination record to their health record in the Magnus Health database.
Maintaining an up-to-date database of vaccination records will support our work with the Baltimore County Health Department in the event a positive COVID case is reported in the school community and contact tracing/quarantining is required.
Note: All Park School employees are required to be fully vaccinated; and we are aware of today’s full approval by the FDA of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and will be considering in the coming days whether to require the vaccine for those students eligible to receive it.
Parents and Other Campus Visitors
We will be limiting large-scale in-person gatherings and we will utilize outdoor spaces to the greatest degree possible.
All visitors to campus will be required to provide either proof of vaccination or proof of a negative test within three days of their visit. Stay tuned for additional details regarding submission of vaccination records or test results. In the meantime, know that visits to campus with forgotten lunches, musical instruments, athletic gear, etc. are welcomed. Please contact the appropriate divisional office to arrange a front-desk or “curbside” pick-up/drop-off.
Our Back-to-School Nights will be virtual this year, and we will keep the community apprised on the status of our fall schedule of events.
The Athletic Department will be sharing any updated guidance regarding fan attendance for fall athletic events. As of this writing, we ask that you be mindful of the number of family members attending (keeping it to a minimum), but know that you are welcome to attend home games. Attendance policies may be different at away games as home teams are determining their approaches.
Distancing and Other On-Campus Mitigation Efforts
Our classroom spaces are set up with a minimum of three feet of distance between work spaces. Distancing, in concert with masking, hand washing, and other risk mitigation efforts, works to protect our immediate community, and the community-at-large.
For now, we will not hold full division assemblies in person, and we will carefully consider every scheduled event to determine whether modifications are advisable. Also, due to complications in arranging appropriately spaced transportation, field trips have been temporarily suspended. (We hope we will be able to accommodate field trip plans later in the year.)
I want all of our families to be aware of the possibility — really, the likelihood — of the need to quarantine groups of students and employees over the course of the fall. Our mitigation strategies are designed to reduce the risk of COVID spread on campus – but we have to anticipate that we will have some COVID exposure over the course of the year. We will be working closely with the Baltimore County Health Department when we learn of an individual experiencing COVID-like symptoms. In the event a quarantine is necessary, our teachers and principals will be in contact regarding synchronous/asynchronous learning for those students who are quarantined. As guidance continues to shift, we will update our protocols accordingly.
The Community Agreement
THANK YOU for your commitment to all aspects of Park’s Community Agreement. Each of us plays a critical role in support of our ability to come together on campus as a school community. All of the steps we are taking are designed to maintain in-person instructional time, the social emotional learning that happens when we are together, participation in athletics/arts/activities, and the experience of community living. We are so grateful for the promise and opportunity of this new school year.
The principals and I will be in touch as we launch the year; and do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. For inquiries specific to Park’s COVID protocols, please direct your questions to our COVID Response Team (covidresponseteam@parkschool.net) — a group of administrators who will be monitoring for messages.
Prior to the first day of school, we will provide information about drop-off and pick-up, along with building access details.
Enjoy these final summer days.
— Dan
