Unit 1 TESTS will be the first week in October. Review materials are available HERE already. Start studying!
Bonding and chemical reactions are the parts of chemistry where things start to get exciting! Bonding is how atoms connect together to create chemical compounds, and chemical reactions are the processes that make and break those bonds to make new substances. all the the chemistry videos we tend to see online of exciting chemistry happening typically fall into this category, and this unit we will see some of that in action!
Early in the unit we will explore the idea of chemical bonding. As you will soon see, this is a continuation of what we talked about in our prevous unit, as well will use Bohr Model Electrons Configurations to explain why bonds form, as well as diagram the results. We will also discuss different types of chemical bonds, namely ionic and covalent.
Later in the unit we will explore bonding further by exploring some bonding models. We will start with Lewis Dot Structures. These are simplified Bohr Modle diagrams that diagram how atoms connect together during bonding. Later, we will look at VSEPR models, which are 3D models of compounds. We will make these both in person with model kits as well as online using modeling software. All of this helps us ot visualize what compounds really look like in 3D!
Towards the end of the unit we will explore how bonds can break and form in chemical reactions. This will be some of the most challenging content of this unit, but also come of the most rewarding. Here is where we again get to mix some chemicals together to see the potentially exciting results! At the end of the unit you and a group of others will get a chance to select and perform your own demo reaction for the class. This is a great chance to see some of those exciting reactions we see online first-hand!
