This week we will get started with cirriclium! The stuff we learn is HERE on my website, and due dates for the WHOLE UNIT are on Schoology.
In unit 2 we will learn about the basic building block of matter: atoms. This information will set the stage for a lot of the learning we will do throughout the semester, especially the information on how electrons are arranged around an atom. It turns out this organization determines most of the properties that we have already discussed, and many we will learn about in the next few units!
The unit begins with mostly review of the parts of the atom as well as some of the models used to describe overall atomic structure. This will eventually lead into the discussion of isotopes and average atomic mass. For most this content will be very new and add a lot of depth to the simplistic picture of the atom you have seen in earlier classes.
Using our understanding of atoms and arrangements of electrons, we will end this unit with a discussion of chemical bonding. You have likely heard of ionic and covalent bonding in prevous science classes. This year we will expand on those definitions, and learn to write the formulas of chemical compounds from these definitions.
