What is Daily 5

The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research-based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write.

Work On Writing

Each day, the students are expected to work on their writing independently, while I work with groups or individuals on their writing goals.

Please go to our Writing page to see what we are writing about this week.

Word Work

This is to help us learn more about words. Please use our spelling page to find 5 words you do not know how to spell and complete one of the activities.

Read to Self

Students are expected to read to themselves each day. This can be a book from home, the school library, PM readers online, etc. Read to self involves students reading quitely to themselves.

Read to Someone

Reading to someone builds fluency and expression! Students can read to a younger or older sibling/cousin, a friend, a parent, their pet or even a stuffed animal. Reading to Someone requires students to read aloud.

Listening to Reading

Listening to reading increases reading enjoyment as well as modelling what great reading sounds like! Students can use a range of resources to listen to reading. In our class, we use PM readers, Oxford Owl, or there are plenty of great books read aloud on YouTube - Parental/teacher supervision required.
