term 3 - week 2

ruud kleinpaste

is coming to our school this week on

Tues 9th and Wed 10th August!

Ruud Kleinpaste is known as The Bugman. He is an expert in environmental education, championing biodiversity and biosecurity and citizen science.

The Bugman visited our school 10 years ago. The students in 2012 wrote a report on the visit.

Here is Levi's report ...

The Bug man is the craziest man that is obsessed with bugs! The Bug man was born in Indonesia and went to school in Europe. He moved to New Zealand in the late 1970’s and his real name is Ruud Kleinpaste.

Ruud went to all sorts of countries and went there because he wanted to discover other bugs. The places he went were Australia to see the bull ants and Africa to get covered in the African Killer bees. He was the first person ever to do this and live! He also went to the Amazon and ate a roasted TARANTULA!

There’s also more dangerous stuff that Ruud did. In Venezuela he got bitten by a giant centipede and got paralysed for 2.5 hours, he went to a beach by the Amazon and got bitten by all of these sand flies and got typhoid fever! That sounds really scary!

The outrageous Bug man is going on an adventure to get people to like bugs!

We are going to go on a bio blitz to investigate the biodiversity that exists in our school!

term 2 - week 1-10

māra - garden

We are learning all about plants and gardening. We are going to germinate seeds and plant them in our own garden.

week 10 - oil and vinegar

EXPLANATION

Oil is lighter than water, so it floats on top, but the salt is heavier than the oil and forces the oil into the water. After this the salt then dissolves allowing the lighter oil to go to the top.

A chemical reaction has occurred! Combining the vinegar (an acid) with the baking soda (a base) results in an entirely new substance, carbon dioxide.

week 6 - 9 - SEAWEEK

We are learning to understand the importance of our oceans and why we need to be KATIAKI of our ocean too!

week 5 - WATER AND MILK

We are using water and milk to help us understand different scientific concepts.
