long vowels

We are learning strategies for reading and spelling words with long vowels.

We know 3 strategies to use when we are reading ...

  • When 2 vowels are walking the first one usually does the talking. eg. treat, beach, toast

  • 'Magic e' - adding a silent "e" at the end of the word changes the vowel sound from a short vowel to a long vowel sound e.g cake, cube, phone

  • 2 vowels - when 2 vowels are together, it makes a long vowel sound. eg. sheep, keep

  • We call Y the vowels cousin. When Y is at the end of a word it makes a "e" or "i" sound.
