Preparing for a live show three times a week comes with its struggles, but it is also incredibly rewarding. The fast-paced nature of live production means we have to be organized and efficient, often working under tight deadlines to ensure everything is ready for air. From rehearsals to last-minute changes, there are always challenges to overcome, but the excitement of broadcasting live makes it all worth it.
Behind the scenes of our daily news show, we rely heavily on the TriCaster, because this controls what the audience sees live. Learning it at first was hard and complicated but, I have grown to love the TriCaster because it allows us to seamlessly switch between cameras, incorporate graphics, play video clips, and manage live feeds—all in real time. I have been able to first hand see our show improve and develop since we got the TriCaster in 2023.
During my three years in the Television and Production program, I’ve had the opportunity to create numerous video packages, gaining valuable behind-the-scenes experience at sports games, local events, and more. This is one of my personal favorites and in this specific package, I reported on the growing national trend of women’s flag football, focusing on its rise in popularity and significance. I also covered the first-ever flag football game at our school, capturing the excitement and energy of the historic event.
During our show, I’ve taken on the role of creating the intro before the anchors transition to sports. This allows me to use my creative skills and videography expertise to craft an engaging and dynamic introduction. I focus on setting the tone for the sports segment, incorporating visuals, music, and editing techniques to capture the audience’s attention. This role has been a great opportunity to showcase my creativity while contributing to the overall flow and energy of the show.
I had the opportunity to meet two incredible people, Kevin and Cheryl, who have dedicated their time and energy to restoring a historic house to its original state for the community to enjoy. Over the past two years, I’ve been reporting on their progress, documenting the development and transformation of the house as it is carefully restored. Their passion for preserving history and sharing it with the public has been truly inspiring, and I’m excited to continue following their journey as the project unfolds.
I frequently anchor on the daily news show, taking on roles as a co-anchor, sports reporter, or weather girl. During this particular broadcast, I had the opportunity to anchor alongside a fellow leader, where we reported on various topics, providing updates and insights to our audience. It was an exciting experience to work collaboratively, and it gave me the chance to showcase my skills in delivering news and keeping the audience engaged.
Words from a previous staff member and now leader:
“One of my favorite things about Keener is how committed she is to what she loves, and anyone can see she loves journalism. When she taught me as a junior we were in the same grade, yet I respected her like a teacher because her passion and dedication to the studio and everyone in it shines through in what she does. Teaching with her this year has allowed me to grow, and I can’t say that about many other people. I have no doubt in a few years I’ll see her delivering the news on the biggest screens, she knows the importance of reporting and she will never let anything stop her from making an impact.” - Bailey Peters '25
