"Longhand Advantage"
Preparation: Select two *different* comparable 10-minute educational videos on unfamiliar topics (e.g., a biology lecture and a history lecture).
The Note-Taking Phase:
Video/Topic A (Handwritten): Watch the first video using only pen and paper when note-taking.
Video/Topic B (Typed): Watch the second video while typing notes on a laptop.
The Immediate Analysis: Immediately after each video, compare the notes based on three criteria:Â
Word Count: Count the total number of words. You will likely find the typed notes significantly longer.
Verbatim Overlap: Check how many sentences are copied exactly from the speaker. Typed notes usually have higher verbatim overlap, whereas handwritten notes are typically paraphrased and personalized.
Visual Integration: Count how many arrows, diagrams, or sketches you made. Handwritten notes almost always contain more lecture images, facilitating dual-coding.
The Delayed Recall Test: Wait 24 Hours (allow for memory consolidation) and then take a self-generated quiz on both topics without looking at your notes.
