Curriculum Overview
Essentials in Writing is a composition curriculum designed primarily for homeschoolers. It covers grammar and composition from grades 3 -12 through video lessons and accompanying workbooks. It is known for its step-by-step, incremental approach that aims to build writing skills from the ground up. The core of the program is a series of short, video-based lessons taught by Matthew Stephens. The videos are paired with a consumable student worktext and a teacher handbook. The lessons are "bite-sized" and focus on a single concept, with an emphasis on applying what is learned. Lower levels begin with fundamental grammar and sentence structure, while higher levels transition to more complex tasks like essays, research papers, and literary analysis. Suitable for all student writers but especially helpful for reluctant writers, students lacking formal instruction in composition, and/or parents looking for a low-prep but effective curriculum.
