Hello Third Grade Families!

We have had an exciting month of interdisciplinary learning as students wrap up the unit of inquiry “Sharing the Planet” and move into our next unit, “Where we are in Place and Time”. For their showcase on “Sharing the Planet”, students used their research skills to write informational writing reports on an endangered animal of their choice. Students demonstrated one of our focus learner profiles this month by being risk-takers. During their showcase, students presented their research to families and our school community in order to educate others on the importance of protecting these unique endangered animals and their habitats.

This month, student’s also went on a field trip to the Bronx Zoo! In groups, students explored exhibits with animals ranging from tigers and grizzly bears, to sea lions and reptiles - some students even got to see the animals they’d written about in their report such as the poison-dart frog! The outing was an engaging and hands-on opportunity to tie together everything students have learned about protecting animal habitats.

Students explore the Nature Trek at the Zoo!

In our upcoming ““Where we are in Place and Time”, the central idea is “places change over time due to human and natural causes”. Students will continue to demonstrate their research and thinking skills by drafting letters to officials in the Brazil government as a call to action to protect the Rainforest from ongoing threats such as global warming, deforestation, and mining. As well as writing letters, students will be adding a creative component to their call to action such as writing songs, making flyers, or inventing new technologies that can help the rainforest. These projects will be presented at their next showcase!
