Grade Kindergarten - Mr. Pun and Ms. Llewelyn, Ms. Camacho and Ms. Perryman, Mrs. Barrios and Ms. Henry
At the end of the unit, Kindergarteners were reflective of why they chose a community helper they wanted to be when they grow up. They were able to voice out their opinions of why they chose that kind of community helper.
HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES - OUR COMMUNITY
In this unit, Kindergarteners gained an understanding of the differences between needs and wants, as well as goods and services. They were able to understand that an opinion about something can lead to change and that perspective plays a role in the way that opinion is perceived by everyone. Kindergarteners learned about the various roles of community helpers and how they contribute to the community.
To enhance their thinking and research skills, Kindergarteners were given a project called “ When I Grow Up……." . They were given questionnaires that they themselves answered. They became communicators, principled and open minded sharing their projects with the class. They listened carefully to their peers while they’re presenting their project and made connections across occupations (similarities and differences.)
Math
Skills developed through learning about 2D and 3D shapes:
Visual Perception:
Recognizing and distinguishing different shapes and their features (sides, vertices, surfaces).
Communication:
Learning to describe and compare shapes, using mathematical language to communicate their properties (sides, vertices, surfaces).
Activities to enhance learning:
Shape hunts:
Kindergartners were encouraged to find different shapes in their environment, both indoors and outdoors.
Sorting and classifying shapes:
Kindergartners were provided to sort shapes based on their properties (e.g., number oF sides, vertices, surfaces).
Hands-on activities:
Kindergartners used manipulatives like pattern blocks, geoboards, or building blocks to explore shapes and their properties.
Drawing and creating:
Kindergartners were encouraged to draw shapes, create patterns, or build structures using shapes.
Shape games and puzzles:
Kindergartners played shape-related games or puzzles to make learning fun and engaging.
How 2D and 3D shapes contribute to other areas:
Everyday Life:
Kindergartners recognize shapes in the environment (e.g., signs, symbols, objects) helps children navigate their surroundings and understand the world around them.
Fashion and Design:
Shapes are used in creating patterns, designs, and styles in clothing and other products.
