As part of our IB unit "How We Express Ourselves," second graders have been exploring many ways living things communicate, adapt, and show their needs. In the classroom, we explored the life cycles of ladybugs and butterflies, the characteristics of the insects and other animals. We took our learning outside the classroom with an exciting trip to the Bronx Zoo. Students observed how animals express themselves through movements, sound and behavior. On top of that, they also observed physical environment they are in while making a connection to migration. Additionally, as they are preparing for "How the World Works" Showcase by researching endangered animals, they also explored different kinds of animals that are endangered.
In math, our second graders have been working on Addition and Subtraction Within 200, including solving word problems up to 100. Students used a variety of strategies—such as hundreds charts, base ten blocks, hundreds blocks and ones blocks, and place value drawings to help them think about numbers in flexible ways. By using manipulatives and talking through their strategies, students strengthened their understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and put back together. We are proud of how confidently they are explaining their thinking and showing multiple ways to solve a problem!
During library session, with the help of our librarian Ms. J, 202 and 203 explored how butterflies migrate from places and places.
