September has flown by and our 2nd grade scholars were busy exploring in every sense of the word. Our first unit "Who We Are" dove straight into the exploration of family, community, environment, and math concepts.
In our Social Studies UOI, Second grade discussed different kinds of families and their importance, creating family portraits and comparing their home families to their classroom families. For our upcoming Action piece, students will choose a OWNCS community member to interview. Students will come up with interview questions to learn more about what makes their chosen person an important part of our school community.
In Reading, our classes focused on different family communities that make up our world. In science, we talked about the brassica plant family and how many different vegetables that we eat fall under this family. Students planted brassica seeds and observed their growth. We also had class discussions about the different vegetables that we eat at home that come from the brassica family (Broccoli, Kale, Brussel sprouts, bok choy, etc).
In math, students used manipulatives, as well as whiteboards and markers to show the strategies they are familiar with. Students got to choose strategies to help add numbers within 20 and 100. Some students drew out their numbers to add or used manipulative such as cubes or base tens, while others used the break apart method or linking bridges.
In writing, students are focusing on building their foundational skills to construct proper sentences before they begin their expository journey into writing about a community helper within their own family or community.
