Third Grade
Mrs.Habous- Ms.Albanese/Ms.De Araujo- Ms.Valerie
Welcome to the September IB newsletter for our 3rd graders! In our vibrant Unit of Inquiry, “Who We Are,” we are delving into the powerful central idea that identity plays a unique role in building community. Our students are fully embracing the notion that everyone is unique and special, recognizing that their identities are essential to enriching our community. What is culture/community? What does it look like? How do people from different cultures contribute to a community? What can traditions teach you about cultures?
We are Unique & Special
Pillar of The Month: Kindness
This month, we are shining a light on the pillar of kindness, inspiring our students to embrace acts of compassion and support within their community. We encourage them to spread positive messages, lend a hand to their peers, and partake in service projects that cultivate a spirit of generosity and empathy. By emphasizing the importance of kindness, we strive to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone. We are thrilled to share more about this inspiring journey!
Our Upcoming Showcase:
Students will reflect on: "In what way can we use our identity to improve our school community?" We will organize a gallery walk where third-grade students rotate between classes to showcase their creativity and work. Student posters from each class will also be compiled into a book that can be shared throughout the whole school, possibly enriching our school library.
Mrs. Habous: Language Identity Groups:
We will assemble students into groups based on their language proficiency and craft inquiry questions that will stimulate exploration and discussion. These questions will be displayed on posters around the school community, as planned by Mrs. Habous.
Ms. Albanese & Ms. De Araujo: Traditions in Your Culture:
We will integrate social-emotional learning by encouraging students to share and explore their traditional cultures.
Ms. Valerie's Class: Art & Music in your Country:
More to come!
Students will also design a captivating map reflecting their identity, showcasing traditional map features along with symbolic representations that vividly illustrate who they are.
Social Studies:
Students will create a captivating map centered around their identity, featuring traditional map elements alongside symbolic imagery that reflects who they are.
Science:
Students engaged in an inquiry-based science investigation, exploring what happens when water interacts with different surfaces. During group discussions, they emerged as effective communicators, expressing themselves confidently and creatively in multiple languages and diverse ways. They collaborate powerfully, listening attentively to the perspectives of others.
Math:
Students took on the roles of inquirers and thinkers as they tackled multiplication problems using arrays. Their hard work and critical thinking fueled their analysis of the challenges, guiding them to discover the most effective strategies for solving them.
