January was an exciting and inquiry-filled month in Third Grade as students explored our IB PYP Unit of Inquiry, “How the World Works.” Throughout the month, students investigated how scientific ideas, inventions, and human innovation help us understand and shape the world around us. Learning across subjects was intentionally connected so students could see how reading, writing, math, and science work together to build understanding.
In Science, students explored motion, magnetism, and applied forces through hands-on investigations. They observed how pushes, pulls, and magnetic forces cause objects to move and change, helping them understand the physical laws that govern the world around us. These experiments encouraged students to think like scientists by asking questions, making predictions, and reflecting on results, strengthening their skills as Inquirers and Thinkers.
In Math, students applied their understanding of how the world works by learning to read clocks and tell time, as well as measure liquids and mass. These skills helped students see how measurement is essential in science, engineering, and everyday life. Students made connections between accurate measurement and real-world problem-solving, such as timing experiments and measuring materials, reinforcing the idea that math supports scientific discovery and innovation.
In ELA and Social Studies, students explored the meaning behind our National Anthem and studied how innovation moves societies forward through our theme “Moving America Forward.” They learned how the invention of the assembly line transformed technology and industry in the United States, making production more efficient. This learning connected meaningfully to our global perspective as students compared American innovation to technological advancements in Ancient China, including the Four Great Inventions. These connections helped students understand that innovation exists across cultures and time, supporting their growth as Open-Minded learners.
Throughout the month, students also began preparing for our upcoming IB Showcase on February 25th, where they will present their learning through projects that demonstrate how science, technology, and human creativity intersect. This preparation has included research, hands-on building, and extended writing tasks, allowing students to apply skills from all subject areas in meaningful ways. By connecting learning across disciplines, students are developing a deeper understanding that subjects do not exist in isolation—each plays an important role in helping us understand how the world works.
We are proud of our third graders for their curiosity, thoughtful discussions, and growing ability to make meaningful connections across subjects as they continue to develop as Inquirers, Thinkers, and Communicators within our IB learning community.
As we look ahead, we are excited to begin our next Unit of Inquiry, “How We Share the Planet,” where students will explore how their actions impact others and the environment. Our next IB Pillar will be Responsibility, and we will be focusing on developing the Learner Profile attribute Knowledgeable as students deepen their understanding across subjects and make meaningful connections to the real world. We are also looking forward to our upcoming field trip on March 26th, which will extend our learning beyond the classroom. Please note that there will be no school from February 16th–20th in observance of the holiday break. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership—your involvement plays an important role in your child’s growth.
In partnership,
The Third Grade Team
