Our 5th graders have been diving into our IB transdisciplinary theme, How the World Works, in meaningful and engaging ways throughout December. Across subject areas, students explored how research, creativity, and critical thinking help us understand the world around us. In reading and writing, students investigated topics of interest through expository writing while also using poetry to express ideas and emotions. In math, they applied fraction strategies to real-world situations, strengthening their understanding of how numbers work in everyday life. After weeks of inquiry and preparation, students proudly shared their learning during the Water Cycle IB Showcase, confidently explaining scientific processes to their families. It has been exciting to watch our students grow as inquirers, communicators, and risk-takers while making connections across their learning.
Student proudly sharing their own cultures
Students acted as Inquirers and Communicators by researching topics of interest and writing their own expository essays. They gathered information from multiple sources and organized their ideas clearly and effectively.
Students also expressed themselves creatively through poetry writing, exploring themes such as nature, love, and emotions, and demonstrating the Learner Profile attributes of Reflective and Open-Minded.

In mathematics, students demonstrated strong Thinker skills as they learned multiple strategies to add and subtract fractions, including fractions with whole numbers and mixed numbers greater than one. By applying these strategies to real-world problems, students showed perseverance and thoughtful problem-solving.

In social studies, students explored the Age of Exploration, examining how explorers and exploration impacted societies in the past and present. Through discussion and inquiry, students developed global awareness as Open-Minded and Reflective learners.
Alvin Ailey!
Outside the classroom, several fifth-grade students in the 21st Century program performed an African dance at Alvin Ailey, demonstrating confidence, collaboration, and the Learner Profile attribute of Risk-Taker!
After two months of inquiry, research, and collaboration, students proudly presented their learning during the Water Cycle IB Showcase. Students shared their understanding using trifold displays, and some enhanced their presentations with hands-on demonstrations. This experience highlighted students as Knowledgeable learners and Communicators, as they confidently explained scientific concepts to their families.
We are proud of our fifth graders for their curiosity, collaboration, and growth throughout December. Thank you for your continued partnership and support in our PYP learning community.
